Despite improvements in detection and prevention, dental caries remains the most prevalent chronic disease worldwide, with the majority of cases untreated. Now, Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus by Swiss dental company vVARDIS offers a biomimetic system for the noninvasive treatment of early-stage caries through guided enamel remineralization.
No more watch and wait
According to Dr. Justin Rashbaum, a firm believer in interceptive dentistry and one of the top-ranked general and cosmetic dentists in New York, conventional approaches to treating early carious lesions need to be improved on. Restoration of lesions may involve damage to sound tooth structure, and monitoring exposes patients to the risk of caries progression and related mental and physical discomfort. “My least favorite thing dentists say to patients is ‘Let’s keep an eye on this’ or ‘We’ll put a watch on this’ because what they are basically saying is ‘Let’s wait until this gets worse’,” said Dr. Rashbaum.
The patented Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus low-viscosity formulation allows ions from the patient’s saliva to diffuse into the enamel surface and to initiate the remineralization process within early carious lesions. Its precise and targeted application on the surface of early carious lesions makes it possible to treat them with just one application in a simple in-office procedure that lasts only up to 10 minutes. With one applicator, up to three lesions can be treated in the same patient. The chairside procedure is completely pain-free and does not require anesthesia or strict isolation techniques. The formulation works on all surfaces and is nonstaining and can thus be used on all teeth, including those in the aesthetic zone. Furthermore, it is tasteless. For all these reasons, it is well received by patients, particularly children.
Increased productivity within the dental team
Apart from the benefits it brings to patients, it is easy for the clinician to learn how to use and so has seen quick acceptance by dental professionals everywhere. Practices also view it as an untapped growth opportunity. The procedure can be done by any dental professional, and it is often the hygienist who performs it after confirmation of the diagnosis by a dentist. This synergy within the dental team increases hygiene production while saving the dentist chair time and empowering the hygienist to work at the highest level of their training.
Dr. Brian B. Nový was the first dentist in the U.S. to try this technology and has since treated many patients with Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus. Commenting on patient acceptance of this product, Dr. Nový, who refers to himself as a tooth preservationist, said: “I don’t think I have ever had a patient who was not into this.”
Also an early adopter of Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus, Dr. Rashbaum added: “There are so many confounding factors in the progression of early caries. Finding a homeostatic balance in preventing progression of the disease is often an uphill battle. Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus is a new, biomimetic weapon in helping our patients win that battle. By treating small problems in their infancy, we can ensure more-consistent outcomes with less-invasive methods.”
Curodont Protect for caries prophylaxis and erosion protection
In addition, vVARDIS has launched Curodont Protect, a dental gel that acts against caries and protects against sensitivity. It can be used to complement the application of Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus. For use both in dental practice and at home, Curodont Protect helps maximize outcomes and helps prevent new carious lesions from forming.
