RUGBY, UK: The Oral Health Foundation, a UK charity that aims at improving well-being by reducing the harm caused by oral disease, has announced clear, simple and scientifically backed guidelines on using denture adhesive. In this way, the foundation is providing uniform advice that dental professionals can give to completely edentulous patients who use denture adhesive. The guidelines were developed by a global task force and are part of a research project sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare.

BUFFALO, N.Y, USA: Nearly 10,500 students applied to attend dental school in the United States this fall. Just 16 of those students are Native American, according to the American Dental Education Association. The Native American Pre-Dental Student Gateway Program, an initiative between the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and Seneca Nation Health System, aims to reduce the disparity by introducing Native American students to careers in dentistry.

Today, Swiss oral health company CURADEN is commemorating collaborator and friend Dr Jiří Sedelmayer, who passed away last week aged 73, having lived a life richly filled with research, teaching and family. A champion of prophylaxis, Sedelmayer founded the individually trained oral prophylaxis (iTOP) programme, teaching students and dental professionals correct oral care for disease prevention. His influence in dentistry cannot be overstated: together with his beloved wife, Lucie, Sedelmayer contributed to a world where dentists are teachers and patients stay healthy.
