ANAHEIM, Calif., USA: CDA Presents the Art and Science of Dentistry, held recently by the California Dental Association, offered attendees educational opportunities that ranged from lectures and hands-on workshops to impromptu demonstrations on the show floor. In addition, more than 560 exhibiting companies showcased their products and services.

Educational options included presentations on the topics of endodontics (“Is it Time for an Upgrade to Your Endodontic Technique?”) to implants (“Implant Esthetics Workshop”) to lasers (“Standard Proficiency Laser Certification”). There was also a Practice Transition Track featuring speakers such as Dr. Terry E. Hoover and Dr. William A. van Dyk. Dr. Gary L. Dougan spoke at the Educational Theater on “Dental Insurance Coding for Success.”

Of particular note this year was an international symposia of dental learning, featuring Dr. Takashi Watanabe and Dr. Kiyokaku Minami lecturing on how restorative dentistry is practiced in Japan. The courses offered information on alternative philosophy and treatment modalities, as well as cultural nuances in the delivery of dental care.

Another highlight was a panel discussion, “Critical Questions That Lead to Critical Decisions in Your Practice,” led by Dr. Frank T. Curry.

Those who came to the meeting looking for new products and innovative solutions to present to their patients were in the right place. CDA Presents filled the Anaheim Convention Center with more than 560 exhibitors, who came ready to share with meeting attendees new ways to help patients.

Keystone Industries had three new products on display. The NiteBite is a custom-fit dental protector designed to help patients with nighttime bruxism. The triangular-shaped device, which is customized for each patient in the dental office, takes advantage of a person’s natural jaw opening reflex to relax TMJ muscles during sleep.

Keystone’s Itsoclear transparent clasp is designed for patients who wear partial dentures. The non-abrasive, adjustable clasp eliminates visible wires, giving the patient a more natural look.

Also available from Keystone was a new “centri-fuse” kit for the customization of mouth guards. The kit contains everything needed to make a personalized mouth guard, which can be accessorized with a name or a logo.

Aribex launched its NOMAD Pro 2 handheld X-ray device. It’s just like the original NOMAD, only better. The updated machine has a more powerful battery, plus infrared connectors that are more durable than the previous incarnation’s pins. It also has a new charging cradle.

Axis SybronEndo offered new TF Adaptive files that feature adaptive motion technology. Also new is the Apex ID apex locator, which can be worn by a patient during endodontic therapy.

For those looking to offer some fun motivation to get their younger patients to take care of their teeth, there was BrushBuddies, available from Ashtel Dental. These singing toothbrushes feature music by pop idols Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, LMFAO and Keana. The newest addition to the lineup is the Korean “Gangnam Style” YouTube sensation PSY.

Every dentist also looks for ways to get more patients to floss on a regular basis, and the new GumChucks is a way to help children enjoy flossing at an early age, so that one day they will become flossing adults. GumChucks, resembling miniature nun chucks, are easier and faster to use than regular floss and easy to use for those with limited dexterity. The company offered a demonstration on the new flossing system.

Clear aligners provide a discreet alternative to metal braces, offering the benefits of straight teeth without embarrassment. They’re practically invisible and they’re removable so it’s much easier for patients to take care of their teeth. In 2007, Dr. Willis Pumphrey and a group of doctors introduced ClearCorrect to keep clear aligner therapy simply, friendly and affordable.

Dr. Fresh added to its line of light-up brushes meant to make brushing more fun for kids of all ages with the popular Angry Birds characters. Another new product from Dr. Fresh was the fluoride foam toothpaste in Spiderman and Barbie packaging, sure to please most youngsters.

Dr. Piyush Karia has created a revolutionary two-step whitening system, SmileFusion, which offers results within two minutes of treatment and is safe for sensitive teeth. Products include prophy paste, whitening gels, oral rinse and toothpaste, and the products are reinforced with xylitol to repair and smoothen enamel. The SmileFusion VIOCIN gel works to counteract the yellow that traditional whiteners leave behind, creating visible results with the first application. “With my teeth whitening products, you can walk high without heels,” Karia said.

One of the most exciting developments in recent years is the advent of laser technology, and companies offering devices for laser treatment were out in force. Dr. Robert H. Gregg, president and chairman of Millennium Dental Technologies, was on hand to discuss the LANAP laser periodontitis treatment and other laser applications. The “Fake Austin Powers” celebrity impersonator was on hand to add some levity to the proceedings.
