MELVILLE, N.Y., USA: Paul Hinsch, vice president of marketing for Henry Schein Dental, was honored by American Friends of Dental Volunteers for Israel (AFDVI) at the Dental Volunteers for Israel (DVI) 35th Anniversary Gala on Nov. 29 at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. Also honored at the gala were the B.L. Manger Foundation; Dr. Allen Finkelstein, CEO of Bedford Healthcare Solutions; Dr. Deborah Weisfuse and Dr. Robert Lipner, board members of American Friends of DVI; and the late Morton Charlestein of Premier Dental Products Co.

Keith Drayer, vice president and general manager of Henry Schein Financial Services, served as gala chairman.

Among the speakers at the 35th anniversary event were former U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman; Dr. Maxine Feinberg, immediate past president of the American Dental Association; and Stanley M. Bergman, chairman of the board and CEO of Henry Schein Inc.

Bergman offered a remembrance of Trudi Birger, who founded the DVI clinic in 1980 to provide oral health care to children in need throughout Jerusalem.

“Like anyone who had the privilege of knowing Trudi or seeing the impact of her work, we were deeply saddened by her passing in 2002,” Bergman said. “But as this evening demonstrates, Trudi’s spirit endures in those who we honor tonight and in all of Trudi’s friends gathered for this event. The dedication of thousands of volunteer dentists who have helped countless children in Jerusalem speaks volumes about Trudi, her continuing legacy, and the transformative impact that her spirit continues to have on others.”

Now known as the Trudi Birger Dental Clinic, it is the largest free dental clinic in Israel, offering state-of-the-art treatment from volunteer dentists to Jerusalem’s at-risk children and youth, from age 4 to 26. It is the only clinic providing totally free oral health care and education. Each year, more than 100 volunteer dentists treat an average of 2,700 children and youth.

Henry Schein has supported DVI since 1997, providing the clinic with product donations, financial support for specific activities and campaigns, and marketing and promotional support for fundraising and educational programs through Henry Schein Cares, the Company’s Global Corporate Social Responsibility program.

Hinsch was honored for his longtime commitment to ensuring that the clinic has the equipment and supplies its volunteer dentists need to serve Jerusalem’s youth.

“This was DVI’s largest gala since its inception, and a night enjoyed by our honorees and guests alike,” Drayer said. “I’d like to thank everyone who had a hand in making this evening a success, including my colleagues at Team Schein.”

Since its founding in 1980, Dental Volunteers for Israel has been providing free dental care to Jerusalem’s most underprivileged children. At the state-of-the-art Trudi Birger Dental Clinic, children of all faiths referred by the Department of Social Welfare are treated by dentists from around the world. Volunteering services range from routine to complex dental procedures. DVI also runs a comprehensive preventative dental care program to help young patients develop good, long-term oral health habits. This worldwide work is made possible not only by the dentists who come to Israel and donate their time and expertise, but also by businesses and individuals who donate supplies, equipment, and financial resources for DVI’s operating budget.

Although oral care is a key contributor to overall health, it is often considered an unaffordable luxury to underserved people who have little choice but to do without it. The situation is dire in Israel. Right now there are over 50,000 children living in poverty in Jerusalem and the numbers are continuing to rise. DVI treats thousands of these children each month at the clinic, yet there are still thousands more who need help.

There is no other organization that provides comprehensive free dental care and education to disadvantaged children in Israel. DVI has won awards from the Mayor of Jerusalem, the Israel Ministry of Health, and the Movement for a Better Israel, which notably lauded DVI for encouraging brotherhood and tolerance between Jews and Arabs.
