NEW YORK, N.Y., USA: American Friends of Dental Volunteers for Israel (AFDVI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to promote oral health and prevent suffering among Jerusalem’s children and at-risk youth and to promote volunteerism and cross-cultural understanding, announced that Dr. Scott Dubowsky has been elected the organization’s new president by the AFDVI’s board of directors.

In addition, the board elected Dr. Saul Pressner to serve as secretary, Dr. Robin Katzman and Dr. Michelle Mirsky to serve as board members, and Immediate Past President Dr. Michael Goldberg to serve as at-large director. New officers and board members will serve terms lasting through Nov. 30, 2016.

Dubowsky, AFDVI’s former secretary, has held national positions in the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry. He is a past president of the New Jersey Academy of General Dentistry, was a clinical assistant professor at the NYU College of Dentistry for more than 25 years, and is currently an attending dentist at Bayonne Medical Center. He also received a commendation from the New York City Medical Examiner’s office for his work as a member of the dental ID team following the World Trade Center tragedy. Dubowsky is a 1975 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine.

“It is an honor to be entrusted with leading an organization that supports the work of Dental Volunteers for Israel, which provides free dental care and oral health education to Jerusalem’s underprivileged children and youth, regardless of their race, ethnicity or religion,” Dubowsky said. “Much of the organizational leadership that has guided AFDVI’s success will remain in place, and through fundraising and volunteer recruitment efforts here in the U.S., AFDVI can help Dental Volunteers for Israel do more than treat dental problems, but also change and improve the lives of young people in need.”

Pressner, a former AFDVI board member, is the president of the Academy of Biomimetic Dentistry and has lectured on the subject at the University of Pennsylvania and at Columbia University. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine.

Mirsky is in general practice in midtown Manhattan with her husband, Dr. David Abelson, and is a graduate of Columbia University, College of Dental Medicine, where she also serves as an associate clinical faculty member and as the vice president of the College of Dental Medicine Alumni Association.

Katzman and her husband, Ross Katzman, DMD, have practiced in Orlando since 1984. She has been a DVI volunteer since 2002, visiting Jerusalem to provide care for the city’s youth more than a dozen times. Katzman is a 1981 graduate of the University of Florida, College of Dentistry. She and her husband have four children and one grandchild.

Goldberg, who first volunteered with DVI in 1984, has been an associate professor at Columbia University for 30 years and served as director of the General Practice Residency Program at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He currently practices comprehensive dental medicine at Manhattan Dental Health in New York City and is the author of “What the Tooth Fairy Didn’t Tell You,” the proceeds of which go to AFDVI. He is married to Laurie and has two married children and four grandchildren.
