TORONTO, Canada: Dentalcorp, the largest dental support organisation (DSO) in Canada, has added 21 supported dental clinics to its portfolio by acquiring Northstar Dental Partners. Northstar is a dentist-led DSO serving patients across Florida, and the acquisition marks Dentalcorp’s first expansion outside Canada.

Northstar grew out of a family dental business after founder and CEO Dr Jordan Tomalty opened a second clinic in 2013. Northstar now operates practices across South Florida, the Treasure Coast, Southwest Florida and Central Florida.

Dr Tomalty commented that Northstar and Dentalcorp both prioritise patients and independent clinical judgement, making the companies ideal partners. Dentalcorp said in a press release that Dr Tomalty would retain an ownership stake and continue to be “instrumental to Northstar’s continued growth”. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Nate Tchaplia, president of Dentalcorp, said that Northstar had “set a high bar” for the company’s first US partnership. “As we continue to expand across North America, we remain relentlessly focused on partnering with groups of similar quality, and our robust pipeline of partnership opportunities clearly demonstrates that our value proposition is resonating with the industry,” Tchaplia added.

The acquisition brings Dentalcorp’s total number of supported practices to over 650. Annually, around six million patient visits are recorded across the DSO’s dental offices, according to company information.

Dentalcorp’s expansion has been underpinned by a partnership model that allows practice owners to realise the value of their businesses while potentially retaining a financial interest and continuing to practise. The DSO says that dentists retain clinical autonomy while gaining access to centralised administrative, recruitment, technological and purchasing support.

Earlier this year, Dentalcorp ceased to be a publicly traded company when it was acquired by investment funds affiliated with US private equity firm GTCR. The transaction closed on 14 January and valued Dentalcorp’s equity at approximately C$2.2 billion (€1.4 billion*).
