In an interview, Dr. Leonard Tau of the Pennsylvania Center for Dental Excellence discusses his Internet marketing consulting business, how people use the Internet today, and how he uses social media channels to help build relationships with patients.

Tell us about your Internet marketing and social media consulting business.
In addition to owning my own practice in Philadelphia, I also run an Internet marketing consulting business called iSocial Dental Consulting. As an Internet marketing consultant, I teach other dentists how to grow their practice using the internet and social media.

I speak at seminars and visit dental practices across the country. I give other dentists the tools and motivation they need to start marketing on the Internet. Some of the topics covered in my lectures include the following:

  • Why Internet marketing is so important.
  • 21st century marketing — How to establish and maintain your online reputation.
  • What every dentist must know to be successful in the new economy.
  • How to be profitable using “Daily Deal” site.
  • How to use QR codes to build your practice.
  • Your online “Web-utation.”
  • Sources available to make the most of your online reputation

How has social media helped grow your business?
People use the Internet today for everything, including searching for a dentist. Through Internet marketing, I've seen my own practice grow by 120 percent in the past five years. I have a strong online presence in the Philadelphia area and can be found everywhere you look. I have a strong online reputation, a great website and a strong local campaign. You need to be where people are looking, and these days it's the Internet.

How does social media help you build relationships with patients?
I communicate with my patients on Facebook and other social media outfits. They send me questions and I answer them and I post things as well. Social media is about having a conversation with someone. You continually build relationships with patients that way. It’s more difficult to build relationships with new patients unless someone is looking for a dentist, then they might use a friend’s recommendation on social media.

How do you use social media in your practice (promotions/discounts, provide information, etc.)?
Every quarter, we give away some type of electronic gift card as a way of giving back to our patients. If they tell friends about our practice, they are entered into a giveaway and we hand select the winner. We always have trivia contests in which we give away a free whitening or other type of procedure.

How can social media help other medical professionals?
My Internet marketing consulting business is limited to dentists. However, my lectures are presented in front of professionals in many different fields. I can help almost any business online. I’m working on a reputation management plan that can be sent to any business to help generate positive feedback.
