NEW YORK CITY, NY, and CHICAGO, IL, USA: Gerald N. Glickman, D.D.S., M.S., M.B.A., J.D., is the new president of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE). Dr Glickman, professor and chair of the Department of Endodontics and director of graduate endodontics at Texas A&M/Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, TX, became president at the AAE’s recent 2009 Annual Session in Orlando, FL.

Dr Glickman, who has been a member of the AAE since 1982, has been long active in various leadership roles with the organization. He has been a member of its Executive Committee since 2005.

“It’s a true honor to see my years of commitment to endodontics culminate in this important position, though I know that leading the AAE in the year ahead won’t be without challenges given today’s economic and competitive environment,” Dr Glickman said. “It makes my presidential theme of ‘Access to Care’ all the more relevant. We will be stronger as an organization and as professionals by partnering with our colleagues in dentistry to find creative ways to deliver care – and help people save their natural teeth.”

A Diplomate and past president of the American Board of Endodontics, Dr Glickman has contributed to a variety of ad hoc committees of the AAE addressing issues ranging from endodontic education, to oral disease and systemic health.

He also has had a long history of leadership with the American Dental Education Association, and was recognized this year with the group’s Presidential Citation for his leadership in revising the Competencies for the New General Dentist and his contributions to the Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education.

Dr Glickman is a consultant for the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation, and he serves on a number of editorial boards, including The International Endodontic Journal and Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Radiology and Endodontics. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Endodontics.

A Dallas resident, he received a D.D.S. from Ohio State University; his M.S. and Certificate in Endodontics from Northwestern University; an M.S. in Microbiology from the University of Kentucky; an M.B.A. from Southern Methodist University; and a J.D. from Texas Wesleyan University. In addition to his full-time position at Baylor, he maintains a practice limited to endodontics in Richardson, TX.

Also during its recent Annual Session, the AAE installed other new officers for the 2009-2010 term.

Clara Spatafore, D.D.S., M.S., was named president-elect. Dr Spatafore is a full-time private practitioner in Pittsburgh, PA, who also is an assistant professor of endodontics at Drexel University’s School of Medicine and Alleghany General Hospital. A member of the AAE since 1987, she has held a variety of leadership roles with the organization, including secretary and vice president of its Executive Committee and director representing AAE District I. Dr Spatafore, a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, chaired the AAE’s Special Committee on Distance Learning and has served as board liaison to its Continuing Education, Public and Professional Affairs and Honors and Awards Committees, and the Journal of Endodontics Editorial Board. She currently is a member of the AAE’s Committee on Corporate Relations, as well as the Budget and Finance and Constitution and Bylaws Committees.

Walton Professor and chair of the Department of Endodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in Iowa City, IA, has had a long record of service to the AAE.
