SILVER SPRING, Md., USA: Bioceramics in implantology are no longer limited to prostheses. Following in the footsteps of orthopedics, dental implantology has seen a gradual increase in the use of bioceramics driven by public demand for metal-free solutions. After years of research, successful implantation of zirconia and sustained function are now achievable. In an upcoming free Dental Tribune Study Club webinar, Dr. Sammy Noumbissi will demonstrate how ceramic implants fulfill a long-standing need in dental implantology through scientific evidence and a broad range of clinical cases.

Functional, safe and esthetic replacement of dentition has long been a challenge for dentistry. Over the last four decades, the use of titanium and titanium-alloy dental implants as a means of tooth replacement has been successful. However, research has found that titanium implants can corrode in the harsh oral environment and in other parts of the body. This has led many researchers to investigate the effects of ion release by metal implants during the corrosion process to the surrounding tissues, which can lead to bone necrosis and implant failure. Some of the documented clinical and systemic effects include metal sensitivity, rashes, hair loss, pain and chronic fatigue in some cases.

Zirconia as an implantable bioceramic was first introduced in orthopedics as a truly biocompatible, nontoxic and corrosion-free alternative to titanium and titanium alloys. The search for alternative dental implant materials began in the mid-1970s to early 1980s, particularly in the field of bioceramics, and initially with limited success because of the materials’ structure and composition. Two decades later, polycrystalline bioceramics emerged as the most suitable material for metal-free dental implantation. The decision to use zirconia dental implants is based on a multitude of factors, such as esthetics, function and immunological concerns. Noumbissi will introduce the variety of and flexibility of implant designs and surgical protocols necessary for successful implant procedures.

Noumbissi obtained his D.D.S. from Howard University in Washington in the U.S. He was then selected to attend the prestigious Loma Linda University Advanced Education Program in Implant Dentistry. There, he received three years of formal training in dental implantology, culminating in a Certificate in Implant Dentistry and a Master of Science in Implant Surgery. Noumbissi has published in peer-reviewed dental journals and lectured nationally and across the globe. In his research, he focuses on bioceramics and their use as regenerative, implant and restorative materials. Noumbissi is the founder of the Ceramic Implant Training Course and founding President of the International Academy of Ceramic Implantology. He practices metal-free implantology in Silver Spring, Maryland, in the U.S.

The free webinar, titled “Zirconia ceramic implants: Rationale and scientific evidence,” will be broadcast live on Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. (EST). Dental professionals interested in attending the course may register online here. Attendance is free of charge after easy registration on the website. Participants will be able to ask questions via a chat window and have the opportunity to earn a continuing education credit by completing a multiple-choice questionnaire on the topic discussed. The webinar is sponsored by ZIRKOLITH from zsystems.
