NEW YORK, N.Y., USA: For those who wanted the most “bang” for their C.E. buck at the recent Greater New York Dental Meeting, could they do any better than not having to pay a buck at all? The Dental Tribune Study Club held a C.E. Symposium on the exhibit hall floor of the meeting.

Topics ranged from bone grafting and implant therapy to caries control, minimally invasive dentistry and maximizing practice success. Other topics included predictable endodontics, direct posterior composites, managing your practice’s online presence, clinical techniques, predictable implants and using lasers in endodontics.

Speakers included Dr. Howard Glazer, Dr. Selma Camargo, Dr. Mark Duncan, Dr. Mark McOmie, Dr. Louis Malcmacher, Dr. Franklin Shull, Dr. Fay Goldstep, Dr. Gary Henkel, Dr. Ron Kaminer, Dr. Mike Rethman, Dr. Robert Horowitz and Dr. George Freedman.

Duncan’s lecture on “Dentistry’s Dirty Little Secrets … What Is It That We Don’t Know” revealed some of the hidden connections between a healthy and pain-free patient and what issues 80 percent of adult patients present with. Duncan noted that there are many issues patients present with that have a dental connection but are missed because patients don’t discuss them with their dentists. Issues such as lower back pain, numb fingertips, chronic pain and headaches can be related to the bite.

The goal of Malcmacher’s lecture on “The Top 8 Game Changers in Dentistry Today” was to teach dentists and team members how to use a common-sense approach in order to integrate new techniques and concepts — such as tooth remineralization, Botox, dermal fillers, bone saving exodontia, sleep apnea and more — into their practices. Malcmacher offered practice concepts that enabled dentists to offer these new techniques immediately and also reduce stress levels, increase production, lower overhead and have fun.

Camargo presented “Optimizing Endodontic Treatment with High Intensity Laser Therapy.” She discussed how to identify endodontic disease, treatment possibilities and understand their limitations. Furthermore, attendees could hear how scientific and clinical points of view establish laser therapy indications for endodontics. Attendees learned how to perform such procedures and to implement this type of treatment into their practices.

Camargo also presented “Diode Laser Applications in Soft Tissues,” a lecture to help attendees understand the functionality, importance and applications of diode lasers in soft-tissue procedures as well as learn how to perform these procedures. They were able to see just how easy it is to operate a laser and how to implement this technology into their dental practices after deciding if they actually need a soft-tissue laser. Laser fundamentals were explained along with the effects of lasers on biological tissue.

Hoexter presented “Predictable Implants by Preserving Bone During Extractions with New Instruments.” This lecture focused on understanding how to make implants more predictable by using new instruments that not only simplify the process, but also preserve bone during extractions.

Evans taught the basic elements of search engine optimization (SEO) and how to evaluate these elements for your practice website. Evans also detailed the basic components of an effective practice website, as well as explained the three-step process for creating a positive online reputation. In addition, Evans explained how to evaluate your return on investment for Internet marketing.

Glass presented “Achieving Predictable Success with Endodontics.” One focus of this lecture was to help attendees gain an understanding of canal morphology in order to help determine final apical sizes during root canal therapy. Glass explained how current research has helped clinicians gain a better understanding of how to eliminate intracanal bacteria and why some cases fail despite seemingly ideal endodontic treatment.

Kaminer shared how new materials can make traditional restorative techniques easier and more efficient, while Goldstep helped attendees understand and incorporate new remineralization therapies and bioactive restorative materials into everyday dental practice.

Jackson reviewed current matricing techniques that ensure quality contacts and how to save time without compromising by using bulk-fill composite technology.

Lecture sponsors included NSK, Colgate, Kerr, Henry Schein, Coltene Endo, Kuraray, LVI Global, Shofu, Biolase, Voco, American Academy of Facial Esthetics, Air Techniques, Ceatus and Glidewell Laboratories.
