DTSC Symposia at the GNYDM – C.E. Program 2009

29 November, 10:00 – 11:00 am
One-Step Adhesion, One-Step Cementation
Dr George Freedman DDS

7th generation adhesive materials have simplified the process of dental bonding, and made esthetic procedures very predictable. These new products etch, bond and desensitize in a single step, and virtually eliminate post-operative sensitivity while decreasing the potential for marginal breakdown. Since 7th generation adhesives do not require “moist” dental surfaces for bonding, this most technique sensitive requirement has been eliminated.
Indirect procedures have been simplified by newer, easier to use, impression materials and one-step resin cements. Etch, prime, desensitize, condition, and bond the abutment(s) in one single application. Straight from the automix syringe, into the crown, and onto the moist prepared tooth. One-step post cementation and core build-up techniques and materials are also available.

29 November, 11:30 – 12:30 pm
High resolution Cone Beam with PreXion 3D
Dr Dan McEowen DDS

Cone Beam Computed Tomography offers a whole new paradigm to dental radiography. From what has been conventional 2D images, dentists now have the ability to look at the maxillo-facial region in any direction, any thickness as well as in 3D. With the introduction of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) the specialist and general dentist alike can now afford to own and enjoy the benefits of this fantastic diagnostic tool. We will discuss the basics of CBCT, FOV (field of view), focal spot, Flat panel types, processing time, gray scale and how these affect resolution and image quality. We will discuss PreXion 3D high resolution images and spend time with real scans showing how these images can be used in Periodontal treatment planning, Implant planning, Oral surgery planning, Complex Endodontic planning and diagnosis and treatment planning for the general dentist.

29 November, 1:30 – 2:30 pm

Risk of Coronary Heart Disease in association with Periodontitis and Periimplantitis — Open Panel Discussion
Dr Hans Dieter John
Dr Richard Meissen
D.R. Gieselmann

Wrap up your day with our roundtable discussions presented by the Academy of Periointegration. This premium panel will discuss new technologies to detect and reduce risk factors: From aMMP8 diagnostic, to biofilm reduction for Implants and anti-inflammatory therapy.
Recent meta analysis reported an association between periodontal disease (PD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) and show a significant higher risk of 1.14 to 2.22 of developing (CHD). The new chairside of detection of matrix metalloproteinase MMP8 allows clinicians to monitor periodontal disease status in a site-specific manner and increase the patient compliance to treatment option and relevance to general health and CHD.
The consensus Report of the sixth European Workshop on Periodontology showed that Periimplantitis occurs in 28 to 56 per cent of subjects and becomes a major problem to implant dentistry in the future. Current evidence indicates that most of destruction of the periodontium is host mediated, driven by bacterial challenge.
Zirconium nitride hard coating technology for dental implants showed a high significant positive effect on biofilm reduction and fibroblast adhesion and surface mechanical resistance.

30 November, 10:00 – 11:00 am
E4D Sky: Dentistry’s Destination

Join Dr. Gary Severance and Lee Culp, CDT as they explore the constellation of stars under the E4D Sky. Demonstrating everything that dental professionals need for the design and fabrication of single unit glass ceramic restorations, either chairside or benchtop; the program will be an interactive, entertaining and amazing display of all that modern dentistry offers for comprehensive care.
See end-to-end demonstrations of the scanning and designing of single unit cases up to smile designs providing complete control of the contour, fit, form and function of all-ceramic restorations. Learn how same day dentistry can benefit you, your practice and your patients and also how the laboratory-dentist network and communications can be maximized through technology and a common software utilization.

30 November, 11:30 – 12:30 pm
Know Your Products & Tools for Today’s Healing Dentistry
Dr Fay Goldstep DDS

Dental therapy has returned to its CONSERVE-ative basics: less removal of tooth and periodontal structures; and less intervention in the healing process. This program focuses on the new technological advances that have made this possible: scientific, accurate, reproducible and clinically significant caries detection; the potpourri of the ingredients and tools that the dentists needs for healing therapies; giomers — the new healing composite resin; photo-activated disinfection to promote remineralization and healing; and user-friendly laser technology to keep perio treatment in your office.

30 November, 1:30 – 2:30 pm
OraVerse - In Practice
Dr Steven Glassman DDS

Dr Steven Glassman will discuss the use of OraVerse in his practice. He will share his experience including useful applications, case examples, patient responses and ideas on how it may be incorporated into treatment plans. OraVerse is a local anesthesia reversal agent that accelerates the return to normal sensation after routine dental procedures. Clinical documentation showing the safety and efficacy of the drug in clinical trials will also be highlighted.

30 November, 3:00 – 4:00 pm
Cone Beam – Awareness in Three Dimensions
Dr Derek Fine, DMD

Cone Beam technology is taking dentistry by storm. From its uses in placing implants to oral surgery to orthodontics, this technology allows the clinician to know more about a patient's anatomy than any other imaging modality. This lecture will explore the basics of Cone Beam imaging and why it is an important adjunct to the modern dental practice. Dr Fine will also present a few of his actual cases where treatment planning in 3D helped him achieve better outcomes.

My First Esthetic Implant Case – why, how, & when? – A live and interactive online broadcast from Germany
Dr Marius Steigmann DDS

Aesthetic dental implants are of increasing importance in today’s dentistry. Success from the aesthetic aspect requires bone height and width, soft tissue architecture and prosthetic restorations close to nature. Out of these three elements, it is the soft tissue frame, which can be maintained or reconstructed not only using surgery but also with the right prosthetic elements. In addition to surgical intervention is the creation of the specific emergence profile necessary in the aesthetic zone. The emergence profile is composed of two parts, the abutment and the subgingival part of the crown. The form of the abutment can be individually shaped so that it gives a natural appearance. This shape is individual according to each situation, depending on the depth, angulations and diameter of the implant. Sometimes it even dictates the implant position. From a surgical prospective, soft tissue height, position and thickness need to be diagnosed and corrected if necessary. From a prosthetic point of view the emergence profile has to be created so that it looks natural and, over time, maintains the natural soft tissue level, or the one created in the surgical phase.
