LOUISVILLE, Ky., USA: Increasing awareness of the specialty of oral medicine is an important focus for Wendy S. Hupp, DMD, as she takes the reins as president of the American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM). Hupp, who is associate professor and interim chair of the Department of General Dentistry and Oral Medicine at University of Louisville School of Dentistry, was installed as AAOM during its annual meeting in Atlanta, held April 4-9.
“After the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas this year ruled in favor of recognizing the specialty status of oral medicine, we are informing other health care providers and the public of our credentials as diplomates of the American Board of Oral Medicine and the benefits of seeking care for diseases and conditions treated most efficiently by oral medicine specialists,” Hupp said.
Oral medicine specialists are qualified to treat patients for such health conditions as TMJ, burning mouth, sensory disorders and many other oral complications.
Hupp is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and practiced general dentistry in Wayne, Pa., for nearly six years. She went on to complete residency training in Oral Diagnosis, Oral Medicine, and Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Md.
She is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine, and joined the UofL School of Dentistry in 2007. Hupp lectures nationally on the treatment of medically complex patients, pharmacology, HIV/AIDS, clinical oral pathology, and women’s health. Her most recent publications and presentations include the management of oral diseases, new oral anticoagulants, interprofessional education, and women’s health.
