LAS VEGAS, NV, USA: As the saying goes, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. But don’t tell that to the 28,000 dental professionals from 79 different countries who descended upon the Mandalay Bay Convention Center for the ADA’s 152nd Annual Session and World Marketplace Exhibition. What meeting attendees learned here — and the many new products that they obtained here — will definitely not stay in Vegas.

To help meeting attendees “strike it rich” in Vegas, the American Dental association assembled leaders in dental practice, research, academia and industry to present hundreds of continuing education courses over four days. Many of these thought leaders were available right on the exhibit hall floor, to share knowledge with their compatriots.

The Annual Session, held Oct. 10-13 (Monday through Thursday), offered attendees the choice of more than 260 relevant and topical continuing education courses, such as pain control, dental sleep medicine, esthetic dental procedures, forensics, geriatric dentistry and oral systemic health, with more than 50 percent of C.E. seats free with registration. More than 70 hands-on workshops were also offered.

Attendees were able to choose from unique learning opportunities, such as live-patient courses in the “Education in the Round” learning format, and a variety of high-tech courses in the ADA’s “LOC” (Learn, Optimize and Connect), featuring hands-on laser education, live-patient CAD/CAM demonstrations and more.

In all, more than 500 exhibiting companies were under one roof, offering attendees the opportunity to view and compare the latest dental products and services.

Here are just some of the many highlights from the exhibit hall floor:

  • At P&G Oral Health, interest was high in Crest 3D White Whitestrips Professional Effects, a product that promises professional-level results. What’s remarkable about the product is its multi-layered “no slip” design that offers instant adhesion that molds to teeth. After use, it is easily removed with no mess and no residue.
  • Gendex has long been known for its reliable, innovative and affordable imaging equipment, offering a wide variety of solutions for both general dentists and specialists. The company’s strong history in dental imaging solutions, along with a deep dedication to deliver products that exceed the needs of dental professionals, have earned Gendex recognition as a global leader. Now, all of the Gendex offerings are on display in a grand new showcase bus, which was parked on the exhibit hall floor.
  • For those who offer orthodontic treatment, Ortho-Tain offers a number of removable appliances, including Ortho-T, a fast, affordable way to straighten teeth without braces for adults, teens and pre-teens; Occlus-o-Guide, for children with mixed dentition; and Nite-Guide, for early intervention of orthodontic treatment for children ages 5 to 7. Dr. Earl Bergersen, inventor of a number of orthodontic treatment techniques attainable with Ortho-Tain appliances, was on hand to share his expertise with meeting attendees.
  • At Sirona Dental Systems, meeting attendees could view a demo of the new CEREC 4.0, which allows you to work on multiple restorations simultaneously, even if you are working on different arches that are opposing each other. New areas include the administration area, where one can choose different teeth to work on, and if you need to change an image that you’ve already generated you won’t lose everything up to that point by going back.
  • Can you imagine a mouth rinse that has FDA approval as a mechanical device? Well G•U•M PerioShield by SUNSTAR is the herald of a new general of oral rinses. It’s the only rinse that contains the proprietary active ingredient delmopino 0.2 percent, which significantly slows the formation of new plaque biofilm by inhibiting the ability of bacteria to produce polysaccharides. Containing just 1.4 percent alcohol, it maintains the normal flora for a healthy mouth and actually repels plaque by providing a positive charge that repels bacteria.
  • DentalEZ simplifies life by presenting the Simplicity Hygiene Package, which is designed to meet all hygiene needs in one package, all within easy reach. The package includes the Simplicity Chair, Simplicity Light and a new Hygiene Unit with a new integrated Ultrasonic Scaler, as well as a place for the new Identafi, a new oral cancer detection system. The Simplicity Chair encourages an ergonomic working position within a smooth and quiet hydraulic system for superior stability.
  • DENTSPLY Caulk introduced a new temporary crown and bridge material, Multi•Cure, at the ADA meeting. Its dual cure capabilities are designed to help dentists efficiently create provisional restorations that are predictable and durable, said Jason Coleman. Also at DENTSPLY Caulk, interest was high for Palodent Plus, the company’s new sectional matrix system.
  • New from Kerr Sybron Dental Specialties is SonicFill, a sonic activated bulk fill composite system that is delivered through a specially designed handpiece. According to Todd DiPretoro, the product allows the dentist to go from placement to polished restoration in less than three minutes. It does not require a final capping layer.
  • PerioPatch, launched under MIS Implants Technologies’ new PeriZone brand, is an easily handled, compact hydrogel patch that is designed to relieve oral trauma and promote wound healing. Noel Wilford, director of the Oral Health Division of MIS, says this new product acts as a barrier and a relief from the signs and symptoms of oral inflammation and trauma. It contains gum acacia, which, when placed in contact with oral mucosa, securely adheres to the affected area, forming a gentle, shielding barrier.

The ADA kicked off its Annual Session on Monday morning with an address by former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Ph.D., who is the “2011 Distinguished Speaker.” Dr. Rice told meeting attendees how her upbringing in segregated Birmingham, Ala., along with her strong and caring family, helped shape the course of her life.
