SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., USA: New technology, new methods and new products captured the attention of attendees at CDA Presents the Art and Science of Dentistry, held Aug. 15 to 17. Educational workshops and lectures represent the core of CDA Presents, and this year’s selection was filled with top-name presenters and diverse collection of topics.

Highlights included “Oral Cancer: A Patient’s and Clinician’s Perspective,” with William M. Carpenter, DDS, MS, and oral cancer survivor Eva Grayzel; “Paid Versus Denied: Practical Tips and Billing Case Studies,” with Patti Cheesebrough and Ann Milar; “The Epidemic of Cracked Teeth: Modern Diagnosis and Treatment,” with David J. Clark, DDS; “The agony of the Code; Insurance Made Easy,” with Teresa Duncan; “Dental Implant Complications and Failure,” with David Ehsan, MD, DDS; and “Insurance Case Acceptance: Move Beyond Insurance Entitlement,” with Mark Murphy, DDS.

Another highlight was Dr. L. Stephen Buchanan’s sold-out “The Art of Endodontics: A Hands-On Workshop.” Buchanan also presented a daylong lecture, “The Art of Endodontics: Everything Has Changed But the Anatomy.”

No matter what one’s specialty — or even if one happens to specialize in general dentistry — there was no doubt a course, lecture or workshop that fit the bill. Sessions were offered on everything from implants to infection control to pharmaceuticals.

In the exhibit hall, a number of companies displayed the newest versions of their “tried-and-true” products, while other companies got the word out on just-launched efforts. A stroll through the aisles quickly revealed a variety of offerings in the “new-and/or-improved” category.

One such product was GumChucks, a flossing tool with a name inspired by the device’s design similarity to a miniature set of martial arts nunchucks. Created to make flossing easier and more fun for children, the product was released to that market in October, but it quickly captured an adult following, so prototypes for an adult version were already on display in the booth. There was also an ortho model with a unique tip that enables users to easily floss on both sides of a full bracket. “It’s the only flossing product out there that allows somebody wearing full brackets to fully floss in less than two minutes,” said Keith Allen, president of OralWise and inventor of GumChucks.

In the Orascoptic booth, a steady stream of visitors was trying out the XV1, described as the world’s first wireless loupe and headlight in one. Booth visitors wearing and using the device seemed consistently surprised with how light and comfortable it is.

The newly designed NOMAD Pro 2, now available in black, was frequently being picked up and handled by visitors to the Aribex booth. With its latest improvements, the device was being described as more durable, more reliable — and able to hold a longer battery charge. Interestingly, some of the biggest orders for the black version are from the U.S. Army.

DoWell Dental Products had a wide variety of new and improved products on display, including a number of drills and burs with special show pricing. It also has a new bone mill table (designed for table use but also able to be operated in the user’s hand).

Centrix had its new AccessFLO on display, front and center. The cordless gingival retraction system features a Snap-Fit syringe with single-use, unit-dose delivery tips.

Steady lines were found moving through the Colgate booth, where visitors could take home a Colgate 360 toothbrush and samples of Colgate Total and Colgate Sensitive Pro-Relief toothpastes.

In the Philips Sonicare and Zoom Whitening booth, attendees got a Zoom whitening touch-up pen, a sample of Zoom NiteWhite (22 percent carbamide peroxide) and a brush head for the Sonicare FlexCare Platinum toothbrush.

There was always a crowd at the Crest Oral-B booth, where brushing stations were set up to enable visitors to not just pick up free samples but to also try them. Attendees got an Oral-B Pro-Health Clinical Pro-Flex toothbrush and sample sizes of Crest Pro-Health toothpaste, Crest Pro-health rinse and Oral-B Glide Pro-Health floss.

With more than 375 exhibitors in the exhibit hall, there were plenty of other opportunities to discover new, improved and tried-and-true offerings in every aisle.
