SAN DIEGO, Calif., USA: The balmy San Diego beach is just minutes away, but that hasn’t stopped the crowds from streaming in the doors of the San Diego Convention Center. Why? Where else can periodontists find 26.5 continuing-education credits, 180 companies with the exact products needed to make a perio practice run smoother and thousands of colleagues coming together to build and strengthen both skills and relationships than at the American Academy of Periodontology’s 102nd Annual Meeting?

And the opportunities continue today with a solid educational program and dozens of exhibiting companies just waiting to share the latest innovations in the dental industry.

At most dental meetings, periodontists might have one or two sessions specifically geared to them. But here at the AAP Annual Meeting, session after session answers all of those questions that are specific to the perio specialist.

Among the meeting highlights: “Pioneers of Osseointegration: Our 30+ Year Retrospective and a Look Forward” with Dr. Barry D. Wagenberg, Dr. Oded Bahat, Dr. Burton Langer and Dr. Myron Nevins. Here are some of the other educational offerings at AAP 2016:

  • “Innovations in Periodontics,” with speakers Suheil Boutros, Colin Richman, Hiroyasu Shimizu and Jeff C.W. Wang, focusing on innovations and advances in clinical periodontics.
  • “Surgical Approaches in the Treatment of Peri-Implantitis,” with Stuart J. Froum and Frank Schwarz.
  • “Treatment of Intrabony Defects,” with Eiji Funakoshi and Tomohiro Ishikawa.
  • “Emerging Technologies That Take us Beyond Conventional Regenerative Strategies,” with William Giannobile, Bradley S. McAllister, Michael K. McGuire and Hiromasa Yoshie.

The exhibit hall, meanwhile, is teeming with companies that have brought hundreds of products specifically geared to periodontists. Here’s just a sampling of products you can learn more about:

  • Managing post-op surgery: Looking for a new approach? Consider Armor Dental’s new line, MouthMate, which is launching officially here at AAP. MouthMate is a new, patented product that allows the patient to brush without pain, while protecting and not disrupting the surgical site, according to Cherie Le Penske, CEO of Armor Dental. MouthMate is ideal for implants, bone grafts, extractions, soft-tissue graphs and more. Available from ACE Surgical.
  • Anatomically designed sloped implants: According to Dentsply Implants, there’s no reason clinicians should have to work harder to accommodate flat-top implants simply due to convention. The company says it’s time to discover a better solution by using an implant that follows the bone. Visit Dentsply Implants, and see why the the OsseoSpeed Profile EV may help you avoid unnecessary clinical challenges.
  • Advanced gum care powered by nature: Izun Oral Care is introducing two products specifically designed to meet the needs of the periodontal patient and periodontal practices. Key speakers will be on hand to offer insight, and show specials are available.
