SAN ANTONIO, Texas, USA: There were lots of smiles at the 2016 AAPD Annual Session, from attendees to exhibitors to the kids taking in all the games and decorations and toys. The exhibit hall offered booth after booth full of everything from dental chairs to isolation systems to lasers and office design ideas. It was hard to know where to go without missing out on anything.

At the AAPD booth and shop, meeting attendees could pick up a Texas-themed shirt to help remember their stay in Alamo City, enter the raffle and learn about how to make a difference in the lives of 27 children, thanks to a campaign by Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children, which is the foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Another place to check out was the Ivoclar Vivadent booth, where dental professionals could find pink and blue OptraGate latex-free cheek and lip retractors. These devices come in two different sizes and are disposable.

Need a new way to create disinfectant? Ecoclean was offering an answer. The Ecoclean Genesis is designed to create a safe and environmentally friendly disinfectant by using a combination of tap water, minerals and electricity. No more wipes and sprays and hazardous chemicals.

How about sensors? Those in the market for an intraoral digital sensor that produces images quickly but is made for patients of all ages could stop by the Dentsply Sirona booth to check out the Schick 33 sensors. They come in three different sizes and are suitable for kids of all ages.

Those in the market for a dental composite could stop by Nanova Biomaterials, which was offering its flowable and universal composite reinforced by nanofibers, which the company says makes the product stronger and less likely to have flaws.

The meeting also offered plenty of educational opportunities.

Topics were many and varied and included “Managing Children’s Behavior for Dental Care,” which included such topics as sedation guidelines, risks of morbidity for children under general anesthesia and whether it can impair brain development.

Other sessions included “What Every Pediatric Dentist Should Know About Endocrinology and Diabetes,” “String of Pearls” and “Are You Missing Out on a Growth Opportunity?”

Also at the AAPD Annual Session, meeting attendees could find even more knowledge tucked away in the poster presentations at the back of the exhibit hall.

The topics ran the gamut from “Association Between Feeding Practices and Early Childhood Caries” to “Medicaid Coverage and Reimbursement of Primary Anterior Crowns: A State-By-State Comparison and Analysis” to an examination of the “Effectiveness of an Oral Health Education Program for Pregnant Women at Tufts Medical Center.”

Altogether there were 407 different poster presentations to choose from, and for all of them, at least one of the contributing authors was on hand to discuss the methods, results and anything else.

Of course, it might have been impossible to check out all the poster presentations during the meeting, but don’t worry. You can find them all online at www.eventscribe.com/2016/AAPD (just click on “View Posters & ePosters”).
