CHICAGO, Ill., UA: The 2019 AAPD Annual Session was held May 21 to 24, bringing smiles to the thousands of attendees who gathered to partake in a wide selection of educational offerings, to learn about the latest products and technology and to enjoy fun and camaraderie.
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists is headquartered in Chicago, and the association did everything it could to make meeting attendees feel welcome. A welcome reception, sponsored by Sunstar, was held at the Museum of Science and Industry. The event’s host location was the landmark Chicago Hilton, across the street from Grant Park. Meeting attendees also had access to the Magnificent Mile shopping district, just 12 blocks away.
Before the official start of the meeting, AAPD Foundation volunteers gathered at St. Bernard Hospital Ambulatory Care Center for Dental Home Day, providing underserved children access to dental care. Throughout the course of the day, 80 children received exams, cleanings and treatment. In addition, the AAPD Foundation gave St. Bernard a $50,000 Access to Care Grant to continue to provide care to Dental Home Day children for the next 12 months, thanks to support from Sunstar Americas and the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation.
After a number of preconference courses, the 2019 meeting got officially started with an opening ceremony and keynote address by Nicole Malachowski, the first female pilot in the Elite Air Force Thunderbird Aerial. Her address was titled “Harnessing Headwinds of Change.”
Other highlights included various satellite symposia, learning labs, evidence-based training workshops, a career fair and much more. The meeting wound down with a general assembly and an awards recognition, followed by a president’s farewell dinner.
Many companies showcased their offerings in four salons, all interconnected on the lower level of the Chicago Hilton.
