In an interview with Dental Tribune, Dr Robert R. Edwab, executive director of the Greater New York Dental Meeting, discusses how the meeting’s many partnerships benefit exhibitors and attendees alike.

The Greater New York Dental Meeting completed its 84th Annual Session last year with a record-breaking attendance of over 57,000 health care professionals, which is partly due to its unique 'no registration fee' policy that attracts more dental professionals each year. What are your expectations for this year’s meeting?
The GNYDM has always been known for its impressive array of cutting-edge programs and exhibits, and this year will be no different. Despite the challenging economy, preliminary registration results indicate this year’s meeting will be even larger than 2008. Given the current value of the U.S. dollar, we expect to see an increase in international attendance because international travel to the United States is more affordable than it has been in years. Being the only dental meeting in the United States to offer no pre-registration fees, internationally-based dentists and their staffs will no doubt be traveling to New York to take full advantage of this policy.

You recently signed an agreement of cooperation with the Latin American Dental Federation (FOLA) with the purpose of attracting more Spanish-speaking attendees. As a part of the agreement, the annual FOLA Board Congress will be held for the first time in New York. How did the cooperation with FOLA come about?
The close relationship between our organizations has flourished over the years so it was a natural progression to hold our meetings jointly. Due to annual increases in attendee numbers and international recognition, we have made improving the Greater New York Dental Meeting experience for international attendees a priority. According to reports published in dental literature, 50 per cent of dentists in the world practice in Mexico, Central America and South America. As a result, the Greater New York Dental Meeting works very hard to promote and maintain positive trade relations with these parts of the world.

You have been working very closely with the US Department of Commerce, which designated the GNYDM as a representative in the International Buyer Program. What are the benefits for your exhibitors?
The partnership between the US Department of Commerce and the Greater New York Dental Meeting over the years has become instrumental in obtaining and expanding sales opportunities for our valued exhibitors. The Greater New York Dental Meeting has once again been approved by the US Department of Commerce to sponsor a Certified Trade Fair at the AEEDC Dubai dental meeting in Dubai, UAE, and in Beijing, China. The Greater New York Dental Meeting feels that with its enormous growth and worldwide stature, sponsoring international venues is another way to facilitate an increase in the export of US manufactured dental products.

In addition, the Greater New York Dental Meeting inaugurated its newest opportunity to increase US dental trade with the opening of its B-to-B Web site on our exhibitor page. This site contains a listing of potential international sales opportunities for US companies that are obtained from inquiries from US embassies worldwide and our contacts with international exporters and buyers. This site also contains a regularly updated review of different countries with their potential for dental sales as well as a recent market analysis of potential sales opportunities in various locales and regions. The B-to-B Web site is a unique opportunity for any company that wants to respond to potential global sales opportunities or gain knowledge about a region.

The Greater New York Dental Meeting Scientific Committee has again planned an unparalleled educational program featuring some of the most highly regarded educators in the field of dentistry. What will be the main focus of the program and which highlights are to be expected?
The Greater New York Dental Meeting consistently makes its mark as the premier event for groundbreaking and innovative educational programs. Among the numerous new programs, and perhaps one of the most successful endeavors of 2008, was the addition of four glass-enclosed workshop classrooms. These 'glass classrooms' were constructed with walls made of plexiglass so that anyone walking by on the exhibit floor could easily look in and see the dental products being used inside the workshops. With the huge success of 2008’s glass classrooms, plans for two additional glass-classrooms are already well under way for 2009.

An uncertain economy has redefined the dynamics of success for modern dental practices so many educational courses at our 2009 meeting will offer information and solutions tailored to fit the needs of dental practices in the flailing economy. We are again proud to partner with Align Technology to host the Annual Invisalign Greater New York Educational Expo, which will offer four entire days of programming to enable dental teams to learn the logistics of tooth alignment with Invisalign. Additionally, we are partnering with the Dental Lab Association of New York to showcase the latest techniques and materials in dental laboratory technology. Our Live Dentistry Programs will be expanded as well. Additional seminars, workshops and many other exciting new programs will also be unveiled at this year’s meeting.

A new feature of the 2008 GNYDM meeting was a Live Patient Demonstration Arena that fascinated even the most discriminating dentists and staff. Huge screens broadcasted the live procedures performed by renowned dental experts such as Larry Rosenthal, Ron Bulard, Douglas Terry and Richard Mounce. Will we see this area again in November?
We had an overwhelming response to these cutting-edge live demonstrations, so Live Dentistry will most definitely be back. This history-making four day programme not only easily filled the arena’s seating for 300 persons, but also had up to another 100 attendees standing or seated on the floor outside the seating area. Plans are in place to repeat these live demonstrations that highlight the latest products and procedures modern dentistry has to offer. We will again be offering eight different and unique sessions in our Live Dentistry Arena located right on the exhibit floor which have no tuition cost for attendees.

The Greater New York Dental Meeting and Dental Tribune have a unique relationship. How do you maintain this partnership and what do you look forward to in the future?
Mister Torsten Oemus, owner and publisher of Dental Tribune, and I have a long-standing business partnership that is mutually beneficial to both organisations. They also maintain personal contacts throughout the year by traveling together, sharing family events, exhibiting together and assisting each other in achieving their strategic business plans. The Greater New York Dental Meeting values this special relationship and looks forward to our mutual growth.
