NEW YORK, N.Y., USA: The 2014 Greater New York Dental Meeting, held Nov. 28 to Dec. 3, offered the latest in dental technology, products and services. The meeting offered something for everybody — from general dentists, to specialists, hygienists and office assistants. In the lecture halls, a myriad of on-site courses extended from contemporary seminars.

Presentations ranged from topics such as “Social Media for Your Dental Practice” and “From Virtual to Reality: Developing and Perfecting Clincheck Strategies,” to technical lectures on Invisalign placement and crown innovation.

For the dental professional with a case of wanderlust, the notably popular all-day Botox and facial fillers seminar examined the history, science and mechanism of the treatment with a hands-on approach — live models included.

Dental office managers got in on the fun with AADOM’s “Turning Mountains into Molehills: Conquering Your Biggest Management Obstacles,” a thoroughly informative dialogue on effective employee-management strategies and solutions.

In “Top Of The Heap: Most Frequently Prescribed Medications and Their Dental Considerations,” attendees could get updated by New York-based practitioner Dr. Thomas A. Viola on frequently prescribed FDA medications and potential interactions with specific dental treatments.

In “Insurance Strategies That Work,” insurance expert Lois Banta taught attendees how to beat the chaos of billing with in a course on effective coding techniques, insurance company strategies and crucial claim form information.

Dr. Edward R. Kusack presented “Two-Day Standard Proficiency Laser Workshop,” showing attendees the way to master the art of proficient laser treatment in two days.

The exhibit hall floor, meanwhile, featured no shortage of excitement. There were Cirque du Soleil performances at the Biolase booth, an Austin Powers impersonator at Millennium Dental Technologies booth, a magician at Practice Compass and face painting at Valplast.

Many companies launched new products and services, and many others offered educational presentations in their booths. There was no shortage of knowledge, no shortage of innovation, no shortage of technology designed to make the practice of dentistry easier, better and more profitable.

At the KaVo Kerr Group booth, attendees could sit down and take in an educational presentation on many of the offerings available under the KaVo Kerr Group’s global portfolio of dental brands. All day long, speakers offered information on KaVo, Kerr, Kerr Total Care, Pentron, Axis | Sybron Endo, Orascoptic, Pelton & Crane, Marus, Gendex, DEXIS, Instrumentarium, SOREDEX, i-CAT, NOMAD, Implant Direct and Ormco.

Henry Schein Dental also had a wide range of resources available for dental professionals, including new advancements in digital imaging. “We have multiple platform offerings — anywhere from an Apple OS to a Windows platform to a cloud version — so what we have seen this year is a big advancement in doctors wanting to move to different platforms and engage more in the cloud-type systems,” said Kim Diamond of Henry Schein Dental. “They want to include all of those types of technologies and integrate 3-D imaging, the digital work flow, 2-D intraoral imaging and scanning.” What Henry Schein has been working on, Diamond said, is pulling these into one storage base. “We have seen a lot of activity in that area, and a lot of sales in that area,” she said.

Henry Schein ProRepair, meanwhile, offered a course on how to care for and maintain handpieces and other small equipment. “One of the best ways to maximize the life of handpieces is to learn how to properly care for them and to do some basic repairs in the office,” said Dyan Jayjack of Henry Schein ProRepair.

At Shofu Dental Corp., attendees could check out the new EyeSpecial C-II smart digital camera. Described by Dr. Ron Kaminer of Hewlett, N.Y., as “dentist- and assistant-proof,” the camera is designed to be easy to use. It offers an ideal depth of view. It has internal filters that block out extraneous color information, which makes it an ideal camera for shade matching, he says. The camera is also lightweight and features an intuitive, touch-screen interface.

At Dental Innovations, attendees could get a demonstration of high-tech ear plugs designed to provide high-fidelity hearing protection. The devices feature advanced circuitry implanted in a microchip, which automatically changes output levels as sounds input level changes. Protection increases when noise levels increase, then it automatically returns to natural hearing when noise levels are safe.
