NEW YORK, NY, USA: The Columbia University College of Dental Medicine unveiled its newly renovated Community DentCare School-Based Dental Clinic on 22 May with a special dedication to Honorable Herman ‘Denny’ Farrell at the Edward W. Stitt Complex (formerly known as I.S. 164).

A number of dignitaries were in attendance at the ceremony, including Dean Ira Lamster, DDS, MMSc, and other members of the College of Dental Medicine, as well as Lee Goldman, MD, executive vice president for health and biomedical sciences and dean of the faculties of health sciences and medicine, Columbia University; and elected officials from state and local government, including Sen. Bill Perkins, Sen. Eric Schneiderman, Councilman Miguel Martinez, Councilman Robert Jackson and Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat.

Facility renovation and startup funding for the clinic was provided by Henry Schein Inc., the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and the New York State Department of Health. A total of USD$1 million was donated by the Department of Health toward the construction of the clinic and a new mobile dental van.

Assemblyman Herman D. Farrell Jr. was elected to the State Assembly in 1974 from a district that encompasses West Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood. In March 1994, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver appointed him chair of the Assembly Ways and Means Committee. He is also a member of the Rules Committee and the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus, as well as the New York State Assembly Puerto Rican/Hispanic Task Force. Assemblyman Farrell was elected County Leader of his political party in New York in April 1981, and he is still serving in this position. He was initially elected on a platform of speaking on issues important to New Yorkers, and since the beginning of his tenure the Committee has taken positions on issues such as reproductive freedom, gay and lesbian civil rights, and the restoration of federal monies for important social programs.

Columbia University College of Dental Medicine (CDM) was established in 1916 as the School of Dental and Oral Surgery, when the school became incorporated into Columbia University. The College’s mission has evolved into a tripartite commitment to education, patient care and research. The mission of the College of Dental Medicine is to train general dentists, dental specialists and dental assistants in a setting that emphasizes comprehensive dental care delivery and stimulates professional growth; inspire, support, and promote faculty, pre- and postdoctoral student and hospital resident participation in research to advance the professional knowledge base; and provide comprehensive dental care for the underserved community of northern Manhattan.
