ANNAPOLIS, MD / NEW YORK, NY, USA: The Organization for Safety & Asepsis Procedures (OSAP) has announced the recipients of three key awards, presented at their annual symposium, held recently in Tampa, FL, USA. These recognition awards were sponsored by a grant from SPSmedical Supply Company, a corporate member of OSAP.
The Dr James J. Crawford Award, named in honor of one of the founding fathers of dental infection control, recognizes lifetime achievement in the field. The award was given to Enrique Acosta-Gio, DDS, PhD, who initiated several major OSAP programs in Latin America. A tenured professor at the National University of Mexico (UNAM), Dr Acosta-Gio has been a tireless advocate for dental infection prevention, patient safety, and OSAP around the world.
The Dr Milton Schaefer Award, named after one of the founding members of OSAP, recognizes superior service to the organization. The award was presented to Lois Cohen, PhD, and Nancy Tomich Zapp, who co-chaired the Friends of OSAP since its inception and drew together a global network of dental and medical leaders who are helping OSAP build bridges and increase its visibility, credibility and relevance. They have attracted top executives in dentistry’s most influential organizations to deliver the annual Dr John Zapp lecture.
Dr Cohen is a consultant with the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research, National Institutes of Health. A sociologist who pioneered the integration of the social and behavioral sciences and dental research, she has published over 120 research papers and edited four books. She serves as one of the Paul G. Rogers Ambassadors for Global Health Research under the auspices of Research!America and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Nancy Tomich is managing director of the Institute of Federal Health Care. She has organized numerous conferences on public health and federal health care issues. A freelance writer and consultant in healthcare, she is a co-founder of the consulting firm ZTZ & Associates.
The Bette & Paul Schwarz Award, named after a couple who epitomize the volunteer spirit of the organization, recognizes volunteerism at OSAP’s annual Symposium. The Schwarz Award was presented to Matt Deck for his exceptional willingness to serve in any capacity needed to ensure the success of the Symposium. Deck is assistant to the director of clinical affairs at the University of Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He has an extraordinary ‘can-do’ spirit, is well-organized, enthusiastic and is highly valued at the Dental School and at OSAP.
OSAP is the Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures. Founded in 1984, the non-profit association is dentistry’s premier resource for infection control and safety information. Through its publications, courses, website and worldwide collaborations, OSAP and the tax-exempt OSAP Foundation support education, research, service and policy development to promote safety and the control of infectious diseases in dental healthcare settings worldwide. The annual symposium was held 10-13 June.
