NEW YORK, NY and PLANO, TX, USA: More than 200 people from around the world attended the 2009 OSAP Symposium, ‘Infection Prevention: Spread the Word,’ held 11–14 June in Plano, Texas. The symposium, which kicked off on the day the World Health Organization declared a worldwide influenza A (H1N1) pandemic, featured up-to-the-minute information on the pandemic, sessions on a wide range of infection control and safety topics, and a record-setting fundraising auction.

OSAP, the Organization for Safety and Asepsis Procedures, based in Annapolis, MD, USA, is a non-profit association dedicated to providing dental professionals with infection control and safety information. Through its publications, courses, Web site and worldwide collaborations, OSAP and the tax-exempt OSAP Foundation support education, research, service and policy development to promote safety and the control of infectious diseases in dental healthcare settings worldwide.

At this year’s symposium in Texas, Stanley Bergman, CEO of Henry Schein Inc., delivered the 4th Annual Dr John Zapp Memorial Lecture, on the topic of ‘Public and Private Partnerships — Important Today, Essential for Tomorrow.’ Also at the event, consultants and educators enjoyed programs on infection control and safety issues, tailored to their specialized needs. Attendees had access to many other programs, including the new INFOBITES, 15-minute rapid-fire presentations on key infection control topics.

A lightning storm forced the cancellation of the John Molinari Charity Golf Tournament, but both the golfers and the sponsors donated the proceeds to the OSAP Foundation, and instead of playing golf had an enjoyable breakfast with John Molinari, PhD, who suggested changing the event’s name to The John Molinari Memorial Golf Tournament.

It was also a record year for volunteer involvement, with dozens of attendees and family members joining in the fun of making the event a success. A ‘Golden Gavel’ award from OSAP, ADAA, ADHA, DTA and OHA was presented to Andy Whitehead for his service in using auctions to raise much-needed funds for nonprofit dental organizations.

Also in attendance were nearly 100 dental assistants, who attended the Professional Dental Assisting conference, held in conjunction with the OSAP Symposium.

The 2010 OSAP Symposium will be held 10–13 June in Tampa, FL, USA.
