It’s been two years since the American Academy of Periodontology last met in person, in Chicago. This year, in sunny Miami Beach, Fla., the world’s leading periodontal professionals are gathering again.

The AAP’s 107th Annual Meeting, taking place today, Thursday, Nov. 4, through Sunday, Nov. 7, offers attendees the opportunity to learn, share and network with the best and the brightest in the field of periodontology.

At the Miami Beach Convention Center, attendees can earn up to 22 C.E. credits in various formats, including case studies, point-counterpoint sessions, symposiums, lectures and hands-on workshops. A Speaker Studio features live, one-on-one Q&A with seasoned experts in a casual setting. There’s also a special perio-systemic general session honoring the late Dr. Robert J. Genco.

The meeting officially kicks off Friday morning with Dr. James G. Wilson’s President’s Address, followed by the Opening General Session, “When Bad Things Happen to Good Tissue.”

The return to an in-person meeting also means the return of the Annual Meeting Exhibition, taking place inside Exhibit Halls A and B. More than 300 exhibitors are on-hand to demonstrate a range of dental products and services. Show hours are Friday from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Professional attendees receive complimentary lunch vouchers with their registration materials for use in the Exhibit Hall between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Vouchers must be presented to a cashier at the time of purchase. Meals for spouses or guests may be purchased with credit cards on-site in the Exhibit Hall.

Meeting in person again also provides the chance for members to interact one-on-one with AAP staff in the Member Resource Center. Staff is happy to answer membership questions, help attendees navigate the revamped perio.org, and demonstrate the features of the online Career Center. Attendees will also be able to stock up on gear, gifts and other items from the Perio Store.

The Research Forum Poster Session showcases a wide variety of posters covering clinical research, basic research and case reports. Abstracts were submitted to AAP’s Research Submissions Committee, who selected all poster presenters and competition finalists prior to the Annual Meeting. The posters selected for the Research Forum Poster Competition are displayed at the front of the poster area, and authors are competing for awards in basic research, clinical research and clinical impact.

The AAP is closely monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the utmost safety of all 2021 Annual Meeting attendees. All participants are required to wear a face mask covering both nose and mouth at all times while participating in events and sessions, and the program schedule and content is subject to change.

All information concerning the meeting is housed on the Annual Meeting website (https://am2021.perio.org) and on the mobile app. The app also allows users to build personalized schedules, find exhibitors and take notes on individual sessions.
