South Carolina dentist is installed as president of AGD

CHICAGO, Ill., USA: W. Carter Brown, DMD, FAGD, of Greenville, S.C., was installed as the president of the Academy of General Dentistry during the AGD’s 2014 Annual Meeting & Exhibits, held June 26 to 29, in Detroit. “I am honored to lead an organization whose members strive for excellence in all of their endeavors,” Brown said. “An AGD dentist is truly a great dentist.”

Brown has a full-time private practice in Greenville and is an adjunct faculty member in restorative dentistry and community-based learning at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine. In 2012, MUSC honored Brown and his wife, Kathryn, for their contributions to the dental school with the dedication of the W. Carter Brown, DMD, FAGD, & Kathryn D. Brown, BS, RDH, Advanced Education in General Dentistry Clinic.

A member of the AGD since 1985, Brown has served the organization in many different capacities, including as secretary/treasurer, Program Approval for Continuing Education approval officer, and webmaster for the South Carolina AGD. He also has been editor, delegate, vice chair, and trustee for AGD Region 19. Brown has authored articles for AGD Impact magazine, served on the AGD Communications Council, and presented at AGD Leadership Conferences. He also has served as chair of the AGD Strategic Planning Task Force, chair of the Budget and Finance Committee, and Board liaison to the AGD Communications and Legislative & Governmental Affairs councils.

As president of the South Carolina Dental Association (SCDA), Brown won a Samuel D. Harris Award for the best National Children’s Dental Health Month program, chaired the state’s Give Kids A Smile program, and started a rural practice incentive payback plan to increase access to care. He also created and chaired the SCDA’s Dental Access Days Mission of Mercy projects. Brown has received the SCDA’s Meritorious Achievement Award, as well as the association’s highest honor, the George P. Hoffmann Jr. Distinguished Dentist Award.

Previously, he chaired the American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Communications and was a liaison to the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs. He also served on the ADA’s State Public Affairs Program Oversight Committee and helped write a series of ADA papers called “Breaking Down Barriers to Oral Health for All Americans.”

Brown is a fellow in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA). He received the PFA’s Dentist of the Year Award in 2010.

Brown and Kathryn reside in Greenville, where he has been practicing dentistry for more than 30 years. Locally, he was the United Way chair for Greenville County Dental Society, served as a Shriners Hospitals for Children pro bono dentist for three years, and volunteered at Greenville Memorial Hospital for 20 years. He also has an in-office, predental rotation for college students.
