MELVILLE, N.Y., USA: Users of Henry Schein's Dentrix practice management system will soon be queuing up for their updates, as the company has announced that it has opened the latest version of its platform to third-party developers for the first time. In addition, the world's largest provider of dental and healthcare devices has updated its Dentrix Mobile application for Apple iPad and Motorola Xoom tablets, which now has a new interface.

Available on the market since February, the new Dentrix 5G version comes with a SQL database for added security and improved performance. According to Henry Schein, the modified architecture will also allow third-party developers to create applications that access the Dentrix database directly. Therefore, the company has launched the Dentrix Developers Program, which aims to support developers with a wide range of tools.

Dentrix-compatible software will be indicated with a "Dentrix 5G Connected" logo to assure users that their application works with the platform, the company said.

More than 30 developers and third parties are said to be working on new Dentrix applications to date, including large industry players like Dexis, Planmeca and Sirona.

Additional features of the software include the Electronic Explanation of Benefits function, Screen Capture utility and a secure instant messaging system called Dentalink.

"For various reasons the major Practice Management System providers have for the most part resisted open practice management systems that encourage the development and integration of various third party applications to enhance our use of technology," commented Dr Larry Emmott, publisher of the dental technology blog www.emmottontechnology.com. "With Dentrix G5 Henry Schein has taken a huge first step in allowing third party developers to integrate directly with the main product."

Dentrix has been on the market since the mid-80s. Henry Schein acquired the Utah developer of the award-winning Dentrix Dental Systems software in 1997. The company estimates that the software is currently used by 30,000 dentists or one out of four dentists in the U.S.
