BATESVILLE, Ark. USA/AMSTERDAM, Netherlands: The Dutch dental consumables manufacturer Philips has announced its divesture of the laser branch of Discus Dental. Last week, a number of laser products were acquired by Zila, a Colorado-based manufacturing corporation specialized in professional oral healthcare products.

Discus Dental is a manufacturer of dental products and equipment and widely recognized as a leading marketing and branding company in dentistry. The acquisition of Discus Dental by Philips Electronics in October 2010 was one of the largest in the dental business. The acquisition was intended to increase Philips' growing oral healthcare business, especially in its electronic brushes unit.

Just one year after the acquisition, Philips sold Discus Dental's endodontic business unit to SybronEndo. The deal included the entire product range of irrigation systems and other products under the Smart Endo brand.

The recent purchase by Zila includes the award-winning NV micro-laser, SLP laser, Zen cordless prophy polishing system and Insight ultrasonic inserts. It also includes the SL3 desktop diode laser with high-end features, which was launched in February 2011. According to Dental Technology Coach Dr. Marty Jablow, these products should strengthen and support Zila's Soft Tissue Management production portfolio.

Zila and Discus Dental will work together to transition all products to Zila's manufacturing and distribution facilities in Batesville. In the transition period, customer care and shipping will be managed by Discus Dental. After that, customers will be able to purchase the products from Zila distribution centers solely.

As reported by Jablow, the new manufacturer will continue selling all the products at the same price. Presumably, all products will continue to be available. At this point, Zila does not have any plans to divest any of the products being acquired. The company has said that it is committed to maintaining continuity of product quality and will be utilizing the same materials, quality standards, manufacturing practices, suppliers and even the same equipment to produce these products.

Established in 2009, Zila Incorporation owns a comprehensive line of oral care and cancer-screening products. The company is based in Fort Collins, Colorado, and has three manufacturing facilities throughout the U.S. Zila products are dedicated to the identification and marking of abnormal oral lesions indicative of pathology, the detection, prevention and treatment of periodontal disease, as well as the management of oral health. Its products are sold to dental professionals exclusively.

Philips confirmed that the agreement enables the global manufacturer to focus on its core oral healthcare businesses.
