AAID sues Texas Dental Board

AUSTIN, TEXAS, USA: The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Austin seeking to invalidate a Texas regulation that severely restricts dentists from advertising their bona fide AAID credentials in implant dentistry. In 2009 and 2010, AAID won judicial verdicts overturning similar rules enforced by state dental boards in Florida and California.

Americans score a D on oral health quiz; ADA launches new website to increase knowledge

CHICAGO, IL, USA: Americans need a serious brush-up when it comes to their oral health, according to a new survey from the American Dental Association (ADA) released in conjunction with the ADA’s launch of a new website dedicated to improving the oral health of all Americans. On average, Americans scored a D on a series of true or false questions ranging from how often to brush and what age should a child first visit a dentist to what causes cavities.

Study Links gum disease and HPV-status of head and neck cancer

BUFFALO, N.Y., USA: Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), once almost exclusively associated with cancer of the cervix, is now linked to head and neck cancer. According to a new University at Buffalo study just published in the Archives of Otolaryngology — Head & Neck Surgery, a JAMA publication, gum disease is associated with increased odds of tumors being HPV-positive.
