NEW YORK, NY, USA: Education, innovation and a truly international perspective are how the Greater New York Dental Meeting (GNYDM) sets itself apart from other meetings. It is a level of innovation that many other meeting organizers seek to emulate and which has earned the GNYDM the first Global Dental Tribune Award for “The World’s Most Innovative Dental Meeting.”

GNYDM General Chairman Dr. John Halikias accepted the award during a Celebratory Luncheon. The event’s strong partnership with the U.S. Department of Commerce and its International Buyer Program means that the exhibit hall’s offerings are available to all, no matter what country one hails from.

Those who made their way to the newly established education hall could choose between the Live Dentistry Arena and ADA CERP-accredited C.E. credits available at the Dental Tribune Study Club (DTSC) Symposia. For the first time since these two educational options have been available, the GNYM created a separate section from the exhibition hall that is also well insulated in terms of acoustics.

Dr. Frank Milnar and Dr. Michael Miyasaki lectured to standing-room-only crowds in the Live Dentistry Arena. Sunday’s DTSC Symposia offered the option of six C.E. credits from a respected lineup of speakers, including Dr. Howard Glazer, Dr. Shamsun Kherani, Dr. Ron Kaminer, Dr. Louis Malcmacher, Dr. Brian Novy and Dr. George Freedman.

Here are some of the many highlights that were available to attendees on the exhibit hall floor:

  • The various narrow-body implants available from Dentatus offer solutions for patients who might not have as much bone structure as the typical implant patient, at a fraction of the cost of traditional implants. The Atlas Denture Comfort Implant System is designed for long-term use to effectively retain and stabilize dentures. The system uses no O-rings, no housings and no adhesives. Instead, the unique Tuf-Link silicone reline provides retention to the implants, secured within the denture by an undercut, providing a cushioned fit for stress-free denture insertion, retention and removal. In addition, Anew Narrow-Body Implants are available for patients who have limited interdental spaces or insufficient bone level requiring otherwise lengthy bone augmentation procedures.
  • Heraeus is introducing Gluma Desensitizer PowerGel, a unique, no-drip gel designed to provide the desensitizing benefits of traditional Gluma, with greater control and accuracy, and a green color indication for easy visual placement and rinse-clean capability. It is for use by dentists, assistants and hygienists on gingival recession and under all direct and indirect restorations.
  • The new PerioPatch, available from the PeriZone division of MIS Implants Technologies, is a unique patch that absorbs wound exudates and forms a protective seal over inflamed and irritated oral tissues. Applied directly over the affected area, PerioPatch adheres on contact and provides relief from symptoms associated with inflammation and wounds.
  • Ortho Organizers is introducing Maestro Brackets, a premium line of low-profile twin brackets and buccal tubes. They provide doctors a complete appliance system, resulting in controlled treatment, reduced chair time and increased satisfaction for both practitioner and patient.
  • DentalVibe Gen II had a new setup to display its new, patented injection comfort system. It helps eliminate the pain of dental anesthetic injections by sending vibrations to the brain to cut off the path of pain sensation. DentalVibe inventor Steven Goldberg, DDS, said the marketing strategy for the device also is new, with consumer-focused advertising linked to a website listing dental offices that are using the technology.
  • SNAP Instant Dental Imaging was demonstrating the latest version of its cosmetic dental simulation system. “It’s now faster and easier to create free smile evaluation photos in order to increase you cosmetic revenue,” said SNAP President Bob Ash.
  • In the brand new NSK booth, the S-Max Pico handpiece was generating a lot of attention, especially from orthodontists and children’s dental practices because of having the smallest head and neck size in the world. NSK used the GNYDM exhibitor hall to launch a high profile in the marketing and distribution of all of its handpieces and handpiece systems.
  • At the Jason J. Kim Dental Aesthetics booth, Jason Kim was presenting his new dental technology, PreNew PreView, which is an exclusive, realistic approach to captivate current and potential clients who may be considering dental restoration and a remarkable marketing tool that provides dentists with a unique platform from which to dramatically increase revenue. There were dozens of dentists who attended the PreNew PreView presentations who said they were excited about this advanced technology. In addition, many metro area dentists have already attended workshops at Jason Kim’s labs and have been selling up cases thanks to PreNew PreView.
  • The C-Mor, a new, ultra-bright mouth mirror available from Essential Dental Systems (EDS), is designed to make performing all aspects of dentistry easier. According to Victoria Reina, the C-Mor incorporates a special, hi-tech process that gives the practitioner the highest reflectance, light and definition available.
  • Hygienists checked out quick-onset topical anesthetic gel available from the Kolorz division of DMG America, which provides fast pain relief for periodontal curettage and other procedures. Barry Larsen of Kolorz says the gel has a 20 percent benzocaine formula but leaves no bitter aftertaste. Five flavors are available: triple mint, cherry cheesecake, cotton candy, blue raspberry, and pina colada.
  • Also for hygienists is a new line of hand instruments by Hu-Friedy Mfg. Co. According to Theresa Biernat, the new Resin 8 Colors instruments are lightweight and color coded for easy identification in the operatory. They feature EverEdge technology, which offers long-lasting cutting edges.
  • And, of course, we can’t leave out the Justin Bieber Singing Tooth Brush released early this year by Brush Buddies. It was the dominant display item in the Ashtel Dental booth, and Ashtel Oral Care Manager Jessica Reza said it was the most popular item. The brush plays two Justin Bieber hit songs, each two minutes long, one for the morning and one for the evening. The idea is have kids keep brushing until the song ends.

The meeting was held Nov. 27 to 30. The 2012 event is scheduled for Nov. 23-28.
