CHICAGO, Ill., USA: Nearly 30,000 dental professionals gathered in the Windy City for the Chicago Dental Society’s 2017 Midwinter Meeting. With 140 expert speakers on hand to share their knowledge on every aspect of patient care and more than 600 companies exhibiting the industry’s latest products and services, one thing was clear: McCormick Place West was the place to be.

An early highlight of the meeting was the Opening Session, featuring remarks and a conversation between 2017 CDS President Phillip Fijal and Chicago Blackhawks President and CEO John McDonough. Their topic was leadership and how it is a cornerstone of success.

On the exhibit hall floor, many companies introduced new products and initiatives.

Henry Schein Practice Solutions, the U.S. practice solutions business of Henry Schein, announced the release of a TechCentral Hybrid Backup Service. The new TechCentral service helps dentists efficiently store practice and patient data both onsite and in the cloud, providing dentists peace of mind about their storage.

As part of TechCentral, Henry Schein’s dental office technology support and services division, its Hybrid Backup Service provides onsite backup technology and connections to its cloud server. The TechCentral remote support services team helps dental practices manage data backup and recovery if data is ever lost. This will allow dentists and office managers in both solo and multi-site practices to spend less time backing up data, so they can focus on delivering quality patient care. The Hybrid Backup Service also uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit encryption to help protect customers’ data.

“Practitioners using manual, complex and time-consuming processes to back up their patient data can rely on Henry Schein TechCentral to provide quality customer service so they can operate a more efficient and productive practice,” said Kevin Bunker, president of North America Dental Practice Solutions, Henry Schein, in a press release issued by the company before the meeting. “By co-managing the backup process and monitoring users’ daily backup, Henry Schein’s TechCentral team can proactively resolve issues or errors that are detected so that practitioners can continue to provide quality patient care.”

In addition, TechCentral will assist customers in confirming that the backup is completed successfully by sending notifications and reports via email, keeping customers abreast of activity on their account.

Clinician’s Choice Dental Products announced the addition of EVANESCE Nano-Enhanced Universal Restorative to its line of products. According to the company, the new product offers superb handling and beautiful aesthetics.

“Ideal for both simple, single-shade cases or more complex cases utilizing a layering technique, EVANESCE is designed to perfectly match natural tooth structure,” the company said in a press release. “Formulated with a proprietary process to optimize the refractive index of its unique nano pigments and fillers, clinician’s will appreciate its polishability and its truly amazing aesthetics — with margins that simply disappear. Requiring fewer layers of composite, EVANESCE exhibits excellent handling properties, allowing the clinician to sculpt the most detailed anatomy without slumping.”

EVANESCE Nano-Enhanced Universal Restorative is distributed exclusively through Henry Schein Dental.

KaVo showcased a number of handpieces. The high-speed MASTERtorque, described by the company as powerful and amazingly quiet, is available in standard M8900 L and mini head M8700 L versions. The MASTERtorque M8900 L now has 20 percent more power (compared to 6500BR) at 23 Watts and features Direct Stop Technology (DST), which stops the bur in less than one second (on average) from when the doctor steps off the foot control. This increases working efficiency and reduces the potential for soft tissue damage, according to the company.

The MASTERmatic series, KaVo’s premium electric handpieces, are designed to provide dental professionals with confidence. The MASTERmatic M25 L offers a 20 percent smaller head size with the same power and low-vibration operation, thanks to its unique triple gear system, according to the company. The ergonomic design and patented angulation allows clinicians to experience better access with optimum space and freedom of work, the company says.

Sterngold Dental offered its Nobil-Metal’s Attachments LV product line, featuring three products: the LV KON, LV HOR and the LV OCAD. The LV KON provides soft Telescopic Friction arch retention, the LV HOR is compatible with the Hader Bar, but offers a more rigid steel housing, and the LV OCAD bar attachment system provides indirect retention, resulting in a very high degree of comfort to the patient.

PreXion introduced its Excelsior CBCT Scanner, which the company says is designed for dentists who demand the highest diagnostic clarity and detail. Uses include implant placement, bone quality studies, pathology, periodontics and endodontics. It is compatible with all DICOM-compliant, third-party implant surgical guide and CAD/DICOM merging software programs.

Rhinogram unveiled two new features of its cloud-based, HIPAA-compliant conversation kit. Team chat allows healthcare team members to securely exchange messages about patient care and treatment, and mobile messaging frees patients and healthcare teams to securely discuss and exchange patient health information on their smartphones. These features expand the HIPAA protections already built into Rhinogram, according to the company. Rhinogram was created by orthodontist Keith Dressler, who saw rigid communication tools frustrate staff and alienate patients. His vision for Rhinogram was to make clinical conversations secure and simple for everyone.

Essential Dental Systems unveiled its newest product: ENVY self-etch, self-adhesive dual cured resin cement. You can stop by the booth to feel it for yourself.
