CHICAGO: The Chicago Dental Society’s 146th Midwinter Meeting was held Feb. 24-26 at McCormick Place West in Chicago. The theme for the 2011 event was “Great Expectations: A Dental Continuum.” The Chicago meeting may be best known as the launch pad for many new products throughout the years, and this year’s event was no different.

More than 600 exhibitors brought their wares to share with the thousands of meeting attendees. While it would have been easy for an attendee to get lost in the maze of the massive exhibit hall, there were more than a few activities, opportunities and products that stood out.

The meeting is known as one of the largest exhibits of dental products and manufacturers in North America. Here is just a small sampling of what attendees could find in the exhibit hall:

  • Innovative tips: Crystal Tip offered disposable air/water syringe tips in an array of unusual and fun colors. The company also offered Liquid Smile, a professional-strength whitening pen.
  • Talking toothbrushes: Brush Buddies by Ashtel Dental offered adorable toothbrushes for as low as 35 cents apiece!
  • New implants: Astra Tech is on the verge of launching the new Profile implant, and at the Astra Tech booth technical advisor David Porter was sharing advance information.
  • A composite restorative: At Ivoclar Vivadent, meeting attendees could learn about Tetric EvoCeram, a light-curing, universal nano-hybrid composite for top-quality standard restorations in the anterior and posterior region. It offers a balanced combination of properties and is now available in new packaging.
  • A disposable handpiece: Azenic was offering a disposable handpiece, the Azenic DHP, which is intended for situations in which there might be an increased concern over infection control, or for harsh reductions or extractions.
  • An injectable hybrid: Reps at the Shofu Dental Corp. booth were busy telling dentists about BEAUTIFUL Flow Plus, which is being heralded as the next step in the evolution of restorative materials based on its convenient flowable delivery system and physical properties and functionality.
  • A dental microscope: Those who are interested in performing microsurgery stopped to check out the OMS2350 dental microscope, available from Zumax Medical Co. The unit offers LED illumination, multiple mounting options, widefield eyepieces and many other features.

Henry Schein booth

At any major dental meeting, there is always plenty of action at the Henry Schein booth. This year at the Midwinter Meeting, that was especially true. Dental Tribune stopped by the Schein booth to see what was new and exciting. Here are our top five picks:

  • CAD CAM dentistry: Dentists interested in learning more about CAD CAM technology were invited to bring in actual patient models to the Henry Schein booth for scanning, designing and milling with the E4D same-day chairside CAD CAM dentistry system. E4D’s high-speed laser makes a digital impression, the E4D Design Center guides the operator through a process that is easy, intuitive and intelligent, and then the E4D Milling Center fabricates the actual restoration. Dentists left the meeting with actual restorations ready to be seated.
  • Oral cancer screening: Thanks to the new portable, rechargeable handheld version of the VELscope, dentists who wish to offer routine oral cancer screening to their patients now have a faster, easier — and cheaper — option. The new device uses the same state-of-the-art fluorescence visualization technology that has already been used to conduct more than 10 million exams worldwide.
  • Practice management software: Included in the new Dentrix Productivity Pack 7 is a valuable new feature — the Dentrix Practice Advisor, which quickly compiles your production data into concise, easy-to-read reports that help you stay on top of your game. You’ll get benchmarks for comparison, plus suggestions to help you improve your practice’s financial strength.
  • More efficient endodontics: The new SAF Endo System from EndoVations allows for simultaneous canal cleaning, shaping and irrigation as it constantly adjusts to the natural anatomy. The nickel titanium technology is billed as “virtually unbreakable” and offers similar cost per procedure as traditional rotary NiTi systems.
  • Expandable digital panoramic imaging: Because it combines an advanced panoramic imaging system with either cephalometric or cone beam 3-D or a combination of both, the new OP300 orthopantomograph imager from Instrumentarium is billed as the most comprehensive three-in-one platform. What’s more, all of the options can be upgraded in the field after initial purchase.

Continuing education

In addition to the activity in the exhibit hall, there was plenty of educational offerings on tap. Here is a small sampling of the courses that offered attendees the opportunity to enhance skills and understanding while bulking up on C.E. units:

  • “ARMY Dental Operations in Support of the Global War on Terrorism” was presented by Dr. Thomas Borris.
  • “State-of-the-Art Periodontal Therapy” was offered by Dr. Paul Fugazzotto.
  • “Navigating New Frontiers in the Field of Temporomandibular Disorders,” two three-hour courses, were offered by Dr. Charles Greene and Dr. Gary Klasser.
  • “Principle-Based Dentistry and Clinical Success,” two three-hour courses, were presented by Dr. Michael Miyasaki.

In all, there were 115 speakers, more than 220 lectures and 40 hands-on participation courses.
