SACRAMENTO, Calif., USA: The August issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association focuses on a variety of topics, including the gains made in fluoridation in California within the past decade, the methods used to achieve fluoridation, and an illustration of those methods with specific examples from San Diego and San Jose.
“California’s population on fluoridated public water supplies has increased from 15.7 percent to 62.1 percent in the past 20 years, largely through the persistence of the CDA Foundation,” said Kerry Carney, DDS, editor-in-chief of the Journal.
The growth of community water fluoridation has been achieved through a broad-based coalition of organizations and individuals, starting with the creation of the California Fluoridation Task Force in 1994 and supported by the California Fluoridation Act of 1995.
Additional articles in this month’s Journal include “Idiopathic Synchronous Central Giant Cell Granulomas Involving Both the Maxilla and Mandible: A Case Report and the Review of the Literature” and “Medication Nonadherence: A Role for the Dental Professional,” which discusses rational nonadherence with an exemplar of osteoporosis patients discontinuing their medication, mainly bisphosphonates, for fear of complications such as osteonecrosis of the jaw. This article also outlines the possible role of dental professionals in overcoming medication nonadherence in general.
Also included in the August issue is “Sleep Bruxism, an Autonomic Self-Regulating Response, by Triggering the Trigeminal-Cardiac-Reflex,” an article suggesting that, physiologically, sleep bruxism is an autonomic self-regulatory response to nighttime occurrences of tachycardia stemming from the brain experiencing microarousals during sleep.
