CHICAGO, Ill., USA: The Italian dental conglomerate Cefla Dental Group has appointed Biolase as U.S. and Canadian distributor of the NewTom CBCT imaging line the company recently bought from ImageWorks Corporation. The dental laser specialist will have the exclusive rights to market and distribute the devices to dentists as well as dental schools and clinics for the next three years, both companies said.
Prior to the announcement, the line was distributed in North America by ImageWorks and its predessor AFP Imaging that sold its European-based imaging division including distribution rights to international markets to CEFLA in 2009. Earlier this year, CEFLA aquired full sales and service responsibilities also for the North American market for an undisclosed sum.
NewTom technology-based devices have been on the market since 1996. The latest version featuring flat panel technology and 7 flexible Field of Views received regulatory approval by the FDA in June 2011.
Cefla's global marketing director Sergio Ghezzi said that the decision for appointing Biolase as distributor for the U.S. and Canada was owing to the its large customer base in North America. The company, which manufacturers from Irvine in California, claims to have installed laser units in 8.000 dental practices in the U.S. alone. It's flagship products include the Waterlase All-Tissue laser and ultraportable iLase device, amongst others.
The company also distributes a CBCT imaging device for use in dentistry under the DaVinci brand.
Biolase have had the first NewTom devices on display at the Midwinter meeting in Chicago last week. The company announced to showcase the technology also at upcoming trade shows later this year.
