SAN JOSE, Calif., USA: Invisalign manufacturer Align Technology has announced that it will be moving its U.S. CAD/CAM and dental scanner business from Carlstadt, New Jersey, to Costa Rica. The existing unit with a staff of 119 will be closed by mid-2012, the company said in a press release. The move will save Align approximately $4 million per year once completed.

From fall 2012, scanning services, distribution and repair will be provided by a shared services organization at Align's subsidiary in the Costa Rican capital of San José. The scanner production and research operations in Or Yehuda, Israel, will not be affected, the company said.

Align also recently disclosed plans to move its aligner fabrication to Mexico in the mid-term.

The company acquired its CAD/CAM business from 3-D scanning service company Cadent earlier this year. Prior to the acquisition, both companies had signed a development agreement for software applications for use in Invisalign treatment, which became obsolete when Align bought the company for $190 million in March
