SAN DIEGO, Calif., USA: When most people think San Diego, they think the San Diego Zoo or Sea World or pristine sandy white beaches, for anyone who is a dentist, a hygienist or a dental team member, they can also think top-notch continuing education, an array of exhibitors showing off the newest technology on the market and social events that offer ample time for networking and catching up.

That’s because from July 28 to 30 (Thursday through Saturday), the Academy of General Dentistry’s 59th annual Meeting & Exhibits is taking over the San Diego Convention Center, and there is much to see and to do.

Start with the continuing education, which this year features such topics as “Maximizing Material Performance for Direct Composite Placement” from Dr. Mark Latta, “Lasers in Dentistry: A Two-Day Standard Proficiency Course” from Dr. Robert A. Convissar, “Creating Solutions with Nano Hybrid Composite Crowns in Less Than an Hour” from Dr. Mark I. Malterud and “A Hands-on Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment Planning of the Geriatric or ‘Special’ Needs Patient” from Dr. Eric Shapira. Other highlights include courses on dental forensics, interceptive orthodontics, aligner therapy and esthetic dentistry for children and teens.

In addition, for the first time in AGD history, dentist registrants will receive access to up to 80 hours of recorded continuing education free with their registration.

The educational opportunities continue over into the exhibit hall as well. From capsule clinics and learning labs to panel discussions and a spotlight series, there are more than 15 C.E. hours available for free.

Thursday, from 5–7 p.m., attendees are invited to enjoy foods and entertainment that reflect the San Diego culture during an event being held in the exhibit hall. During this time, attendees, friends and family will get a first look at new technologies and products available to general dentists today. This welcome reception will feature cash bars and hors d’oevres.

Other highlights from the AGD annual session include:

  • AGD keynote speech featuring J. Craig Venter, PhD: Dr. Venter is regarded as one of the leading scientists of the 21st century for his numerous contributions to genomic research. He is founder, chairman and president of the J. Craig Venter Institute, a not-for-profit research organization with approximately 400 scientists and staff dedicated to human, microbial, plant, synthetic and environmental genomic research and the exploration of social and ethical issues in genomics. Venter will speak during the keynote session from 7:45–8:45 a.m. Friday.
  • AGD Convocation: At 3:30 p.m. Saturday, the AGD will honor the accomplishments of the 2011 class of fellows, masters and lifelong learning and service recognition (LLSR) recipients at the AGD Convocation Ceremony. The ceremony will be held at the San Diego Convention Center.
  • Saturday Night Celebration: Take to the water for an evening while also celebrating the 2011 class of fellows, masters and LLSR recipients. Starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, cruise aboard one of San Diego’s newest vessels. Guests will enjoy cocktails and a meal featuring California cuisine. The tour will include panoramic views of the San Diego skyline, as well as close-up views of historic San Diego landmarks. Musical entertainment will be provided.
