Dr. Gavin J. Miller, originally from South Africa, graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1986 and spent over a decade in private practice before moving to San Diego in California in the U.S. His practice offers advanced general, restorative and cosmetic dentistry for the whole family. In this interview, Dr. Miller discusses how Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus, a unique biomimetic system for the treatment of early caries through guided enamel remineralization, has transformed his approach to early caries treatment, enhancing both patient care and the efficiency of his hygiene department.

Dr. Miller, could you please tell us why you decided to integrate Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus into your practice and how it has influenced your approach to early caries management?
I decided to integrate Curodont into my practice because I believe that a watch and wait approach—where we monitor early caries without immediate intervention—is ineffective. In medicine, doctors treat conditions like hypertension or high cholesterol early to prevent more serious issues. Why shouldn’t dentists do the same? In our practice, we address incipient lesions early, rather than waiting for a cavity to possibly develop that would require a more invasive procedure.
Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus offers unique benefits, needing no drilling or anesthesia and being nonstaining, making it especially suitable for pediatric patients. Could you discuss some specific advantages you’ve observed in terms of patient comfort and treatment outcomes?
Curodont’s early intervention preserves tooth structure by remineralizing the lesion. It’s quick, painless and ideal for anxious patients, including children, as it doesn’t require anesthesia or drilling and doesn’t have an unpleasant taste or odor. Curodont Repair Fluoride Plus has a high success rate and more than 200,000 teeth have been treated with this product in the U.S. over the past two years alone. Our experience has been extremely positive too, and we have had high patient acceptance.
How have you and your team integrated Curodont into your daily workflow, and what advice would you give to other practitioners considering this technology?
Most Curodont applications are done in the hygiene room, taking just 5 minutes, so it doesn’t disrupt our workflow. It’s also boosted our hygiene production and given our hygienists a vested interest in preventing decay cavities. They feel more valuable to the practice, and their efforts are genuinely appreciated. It’s been a win–win for everyone, and I highly recommend other dentists consider adding this treatment to their offerings.
