NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J., USA: Johnson & Johnson has announced the resignation of its Chief Executive Officer William C. Weldon. The sixty-three year old is succeeded by Alex Gorsky, who currently serves as Vice Chairman of one of the company's Executive Committees, the vendor of Listerine mouthwash said. Reasons for Weldon's leaving were not given.

Weldon has been with Johnson & Johnson in different positions for over 40 years. He became CEO of the company in 2002. According to officials statements, he will remain Chairman of the company's board of directors.

J&J's stocks at the NASDAQ stock market were not affected by the news.

Under Weldon's leadership, J&J expanded significantly into other businesses with a number of aquisitions such as Pfizer's health consumer division in 2006 that included the popular Listerine mouthwash brand. As latest aquisition, the company bought the Swiss orthopaedic specialist company Synthes in April last year.

His last years as CEO were also overshadowed by corruption charges and a high number of product recalls that included four million bottles of Listerine Agent Cool Blue the company said to be contaminated with unspecified microorganisms, among others.

Gorsky's appointment as CEO will become effective at the company's next shareholder meeting in April this year.
