CHICAGO, Ill., USA: The American Dental Association (ADA) recently honored state and local dental societies across the country with its Golden Apple Awards. Now in its 26th year, the annual award program has selected 17 entries for the prestigious recognition which honors leaders, members and staff who have contributed to the success of dental society activities and excellence in leadership.
The 2014 Golden Apple Awards were presented to the following societies:
- Legislative Achievement – The Missouri Dental Association “Reinstatement of Adult Medicaid Dental Services,” received the award in the constituent society category with a total membership of more than 1,000 dentists. The Nebraska Dental Association received the award in the constituent society category with total membership fewer than 1,000 dentists for its “Medicaid RAC Audits.”
- Excellence in Membership Recruitment and Retention Activity – The Mississippi Dental Association, “2013-2014 Member Recruitment Campaign,” received the award for membership recruitment. The San Fernando Dental Society’s “Afternoon Tea” received the award for membership retention.
- Excellence in Dental Health Promotion to the Public – The Wisconsin Dental Association’s “Print and Electronic Newsletter – ‘Tongue ‘n Cheek’” received the award for a dental society with total membership more than 1,000 dentists. The Genesee District Dental Society (MI), received the award for a dental society with total membership fewer than 1,000 dentists for its “Babies Health: From the Bottoms Up.”
- Excellence in Member-Related Services/Benefits – The Massachusetts Dental Society received the award for a dental society with total membership greater than 1,000 dentists for “MDS Mobile App – MDS Mobile.” The Monterey Bay Dental Society (CA), received the award for a dental society with total membership fewer than 1,000 dentists for “Mentoring & Professional Guidance by the Smile Line.”
- Outstanding Achievement in the Promotion of Dental Ethics – The Virginia Dental Association, was honored for “One URL – A Multitude of Resources on Ethics.”
- Achievement in Dental School/Student Involvement in Organized Dentistry – The Washington State Dental Association received the award for “2014 Dental Action Day.”
- Excellence in Science Fair Program Support and Promotion – The Louisville Dental Society received the award for “Science Fair Awards.”
- Excellence in Dentist Well-Being Activities – The Louisiana Dental Association (LDA) was honored for its “LDA Well-Being Committee: The Next Chapter.”
- Open Category – The Washington State Dental Association’s “The Affordable Care Act and You” received the award in the constituent category. The Metro Denver Dental Society’s “Mountain West Dental Institute” received the award in the component category.
- Excellence in Access to Dental Care Programs - The Seattle King County Dental Society received the award for “Complex Oral Surgery Service.”
- Outstanding Achievement in the Promotion of Diversity and Inclusion – In the constituent category, the Washington State Dental Association received the award for “Race, Gender and Dentistry: A Conversation.” In the component category, the San Fernando Valley Dental Society received the award for “Diversity & Inclusion.”
- Inspiring Careers in Dental Education – This year’s honoree is Dr. Maureen McAndrew, from the New York University College of Dentistry.
The not-for-profit ADA is the nation’s largest dental association, representing more than 158,000 dentist members. The premier source of oral health information, the ADA has advocated for the public’s health and promoted the art and science of dentistry since 1859.
