LAS VEGAS, Nev., USA: At its 27-and-a-half-year anniversary celebration in Las Vegas last week, international dental equipment manufacturer Sirona launched a new intraoral camera and digital sensor. Both the Omnicam and Schick 33 sensor are intended to enhance the capturing and processing of images taken in the intraoral space.

In contrast to Sirona's Bluecam intraoral scanner, the powder-free Omnicam records data in both 2-D and 3-D and offers ColorStreaming, a capture feature that will allow clinicians to display 3-D data in full color for the first time. According to Sirona, the device also provides a uniform field of illumination and captures half-arch and full-arch impressions quicker. Substandard images are supposed be eliminated automatically with the camera's anti-vibration features.

The new intraoral digital sensor, compatible with all of Schick Technology's existing platforms, is claimed to offer unsurpassed image quality and comes with image-enhancement software that offers practitioners full control over their images. With the Image Preference Presets and User-Definable Tasks options, clinicians will be able to change between different diagnostic settings more easily, executive vice president of Sirona Kevin McNulty said.

While Schick 33 will be distributed only to dentists in the U.S. and Canada through Sirona's distributor Patterson Dental, the Omnicam intraoral camera is available worldwide, except in some countries in Asia, the CIS and South America. Chairman and CEO Jost Fischer commented that the new products demonstrate the commitment of his company to investing in research and development for improving patient care.

Sirona traditionally uses its annual event, celebrating the 1985 market introduction of the world's first dental CAD/CAM system, for launching new products. This year's edition saw a record number of 4,000 participants gathering at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino in Las Vegas over the last weekend.

The meeting is considered one of the most important industry events in the field of digital dentistry and dental CAD/CAM.
