SAN ANTONIO: During the recent Texas Meeting, a very special transaction took place: The Raven Maria Blanco Foundation presented a check to the San Antonio Christian Dental Clinic in honor of Maddoux Cordova, who died Dec. 27, 2009, at the age of 22 months after complications from a dental procedure.

The Raven Maria Blanco Foundation, named after a little girl who died in 2007 while at her dentist for a routine check-up and cleaning, was at the Texas Meeting to raise awareness and educate dentists and staff about the need to stay vigilant and be prepared for a medical emergency that could occur during dental treatment.

The foundation has adopted the Six Links of Survival concept, developed by Dr. John Robinson and Dr. Chris Rothman of the Institute of Medical Emergency Preparedness, as a simple model that allows dentists and staff to easily and effectively prepare their offices.

The Six Links of Survival are dentist training, staff training, mock drills, medical emergency manual, appropriate medical emergency equipment and necessary medications.

In addition, the foundation is also raising money for two projects. First is the “5,000 in 5” campaign, which aims to get 5,000 AED devices into areas of need within the next five years.

The group’s other project is the tooth fairy pillows. Buy one of these pillows and the money will go toward the foundation’s current oral-health campaign, which strives to bring prevention to underserved children. If you don’t see a pillow that suits your needs, you can have one customized just for you.

The foundation's website is www.rmbfinc.org.
