CHICAGO, IL, USA: Dr Theodore M. Siegel wanted to give back to the local community, but he didn’t want to just write a check to a charity. He wanted to do more. So he decided that for one day every year, he would open up his practice to all local patients and offer free services. Since his annual ‘Dentists With Heart’ event began in 2005, Siegel said, more than 2,000 patients have been treated with more than $1.25 million in care.

Seattle, WA, USA: Global2Labs and the Northwest Implant Research Group (NWIRG) have announced a new dental implant research study now open for doctor participation in the United States and internationally. The purpose of the study is to determine the success rates for newer implant designs coming to market. This study will help define whether the success rates with newer implant designs are at comparable rates as previous generations or at even higher rates of success.

CHICAGO, IL, USA: Nearly 150 stakeholders from non-profit groups, government agencies and private industry met 23 through 25 March at a summit on access to dental care convened by the American Dental Association (ADA). The goal of the summit was to create a common vision toward improving the oral health of underserved populations.

CHARLOTTE, NC, USA: The National Children’s Oral Health Foundation (NCOHF), America’s Toothfairy, recently announced a new affiliate member: the University of Miami Department of Pediatrics. Brian Guerdat, program panager of the department, said that his group’s mission is to improve the oral health of preschool-aged children in Miami-Dade County, FL, USA, through “screening, prevention and education.” Pediatric residents and medical students are trained in oral health assessment and fluoride varnish application in order to work with local Head Start Centers.

NEW YORK, NY, USA: Seeking to shed new light on HIV’s ability to survive in the body and cause disease, the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has awarded a five-year, US$1.9 million grant to an AIDS research team at the New York University College of Dentistry to continue its study of a new mode of HIV replication that involves cooperation between viruses.

NEW YORK CITY, NY, USA: The Indian Health Service (IHS), the federal health program in the United States for American Indians and Alaska Natives, is getting some increased attention from dental health care leaders. John S. Findley, DDS, president of the American Dental Association (ADA), recently told the US House Committee on interior appropriations charged with funding the Indian Health Service (IHS) that the IHS dental workforce, already understaffed, faces a significant number of retirements by the most experienced dentists. Dr Findley pointed out that this occurs at a time when “childhood caries and periodontal disease among diabetics are rampant.”

The not-for-profit American Dental Association (ADA) will celebrate its 150th anniversary during its 2009 Annual Session, to be held 30 September to 4 October in Honolulu, HI, USA. The ADA Annual Session and World Marketplace Exhibition will bring together leaders in dental practice, research, academics and industry to present more than 180 continuing education courses over four days. More than 30,000 attendees are anticipated from the United States and around the world along with more than 350 exhibitors.

Dr Ivan Ho, a Southern California-based dentist and founder of Platinum Dental, recently performed a concentrated stem cell transplant for one of his patients who is in need of implants. The innovative procedure, called a bone marrow aspirate concentration (BMAC), is reported to be the first on the West Coast and only the second in the United States to be performed. Dr Ho harvested and transplanted stem cells from the patient’s own bone marrow into the jawbone to create a dense bone structure to which a dental implant can later be permanently set. The procedure was conducted on 23 March at Platinum Dental in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, USA.

Bad breath, sensitive teeth and eroded tooth enamel are just a few of the signs that dentists use to determine whether a patient suffers from an eating disorder. Other signs include teeth that are worn and appear almost translucent, mouth sores, dry mouth, cracked lips, bleeding gums and tender mouth, throat and salivary glands, according to the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD).

Rossman, who is in private practice in Philadelphia, PA, USA, discussed AAE initiatives that have significantly increased media coverage of endodontics and have positioned the association as an authoritative resource in root canal education. He also discussed the need to involve endodontists in treatment planning decisions, and he stressed the importance of saving patients’ natural teeth whenever possible.
