ATLANTA, Ga., USA: The Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting — one of the nation’s leading dental meetings and a comprehensive source of continuing education in dentistry — attracted 20,344 dentists, hygienists, assistants, students and other dental professionals and industry personnel to the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Held recently, the 105th Thomas P. Hinman Dental Meeting featured “The Changing Face of Dentistry,” a nod not only to the technological evolution of the profession, but also to overall change in the industry.

Hinman 2017 featured more than 80 world-class speakers with 26 new to Hinman; more than 245 courses, including 70 participation and interactive courses; the returning G.O.L.D. (Graduates of the Last Decade) and S.I.L.V.E.R. (Strategies to Implement that Lead to a Valuable, Enjoyable Retirement) programs; Career Connections to match employers with candidates; and over 400 companies demonstrating the latest in dentistry in the exhibit hall.

As a result of the meeting, the Hinman Dental Society has contributed more than $8.5 million over the past 17 years, with $600,000 this year alone, in scholarships and large gifts in support of dental education. In addition, through the raffle, shop and #MyHinman campaign, Hinman raised $8,000 in scholarship funds.

Dr. Jane Puskas, Hinman’s first female general chairman, along with her program chairmen, Dr. Eddie Pafford and Dr. Bob O’Donnell, assembled what can only be called an exceptional program and outstanding social events during the Hinman 2017 meeting. “We were especially excited to host around 2,800 dental professionals at the Georgia Aquarium for the ‘Party Under the Sea’ on Friday night. It was a fantastic party and opportunity to celebrate dentistry together in an amazing setting,” Puskas said.

The Keynote Session was well attended, with nearly 1,700 people turning out to hear Dr. Sanjay Gupta, the Emmy Award-winning chief medical correspondent for CNN and practicing neurosurgeon.

Hinman 2017 drew a total of 5,755 dentists, 4,162 dental hygienists and 2,772 dental assistants. The meeting saw a three percent increase in dentists and dental assistants and a six percent increase in office staff over last year, a testament to the strong program. Some of the most popular courses included: Dr. David Meinz’s “Energize Your Life!” drawing 1,008 attendees, and Ms. Amber Riley’s “Beyond the Tag and Bag: Forensic Dentistry Beyond the Morgue Walls,” which attracted 996 people. Also popular were Dr. Brigitte Lovell’s “Ouch! I Have a Tooth Pain, but No One Can Find Anything Wrong,” that drew 969 in attendance; Ms. Amber Riley’s “Patients, Pills and Pathologies: Why Medial History Clues Are Critical to Dental Treatment,” attracting 846 attendees; and Dr. Harold Crossley’s “Clinically Important Drug Interactions and How to Avoid Them,” filling the room with 822 attendees.

Dental student attendance was significant, with a total of 793 students from schools across the country. Many took part in the G.O.L.D. Program, Dental Student Coffee Talk and Scholars’ Luncheon. At the Scholars’ Luncheon held during the meeting, Hinman awarded 92 scholarships at 47 premiere dental programs throughout the Southeast.

The Hinman Dental Meeting is designed with a commitment to quality and professionalism and a high regard for the value of continuing education.
