SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., USA: The planned deportation of a Filipino dental assistant from California could bring new life to the U.S. immigration debate. The Philippines' largest television network GMA-7 is reporting that the Department of Homeland Security is blocking the final bid for permanent residency of 31-year-old Jose Isabelo Librojo from San Francisco.
According to GMA-7, Librojo, who works as a full-time registered dental assistant and X-ray technician, is facing deportation to his birth country this weekend. He has been living in the U:.S. as an undocumented immigrant since his parents filed for political asylum in 1995.
Meanwhile, his imminent deportation has spawned several petitions and initiatives aimed at state and national authorities to force the department to reopen the case and make him a permanent resident or green-card holder. His supporters also hope to gain backing from a new policy introduced by the Obama administration that allows the department to review deportations on a case-by-case basis.
"Mr. Librojo should not be a priority for deportation under the new guidelines," they stated on the change.org website. "Instead, his case should be reopened to allow him to obtain legal permanent status to reside in the United States."
Librojo's case could also fall under the DREAM Act, a bill first proposed in 2001 that aims to provide conditional permanent residency to illegal aliens who arrived as minors in the U.S. and have no criminal record. Having failed to achieve majority votes in the U.S. congress, the bill has been re-introduced several times during the last few years. The latest version was rejected by the U.S. senate in May this year
