Chicago, IL, USA: Alice DeForest, executive director of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), recently announced her retirement after 26 years of service. DeForest joined the AAP as executive director in November 1986. During her tenure, AAP membership has nearly doubled to more than 8,500 periodontists worldwide, and its operating revenues have increased from $1 million to $11.5 million.

Under DeForest’s leadership, the AAP has strengthened and diversified its strategic efforts, including: more robust scientific and clinical impact through numerous state of the science workshops, and increased publications; expanded member services and continuing education opportunities; established and advanced relationships with corporate partners; and increased influence with other periodontal, dental, medical and governmental organizations, both domestically and globally.

DeForest’s official retirement date is Oct. 2, 2012.

“I have been in a unique position to observe the dramatic changes in the Academy and in the specialty of periodontics over the past two decades,” said DeForest. “In 1986, few periodontists placed implants, regeneration of soft and hard tissues was still a dream, and the relationship between periodontal disease and overall health was yet to be recognized. Today, periodontists are premier providers of implant and regeneration care as well as integral contributors to both oral and overall health.”

The AAP is currently is seeking a qualified individual to become its next executive director. The executive search firm Korn/Ferry International has been retained for the search. “It has been an honor and a pleasure to lead the dedicated staff of the AAP for the past 26 years, as well as partner with visionary AAP leaders to advance the specialty,” DeForest said.
