SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA: In an interview with Dental Tribune during the recent California Dental Association meeting, David D. Wilson discussed the features and benefits of the Digital DOC intraoral camera.

What is Digital Doc?
David D. Wilson: Digital DOC is recognized as the industry leader in its category — the category, of course, is the intraoral camera. We’ve been in business 11 years, and we focus on intraoral cameras. We feel like intraoral cameras are still the greatest technology that ever happened in the operatory, and today we are the industry leader in that marketplace.

Anything new in the design of the camera that you are featuring here at CDA?
No new releases this year. It’s the same camera we released last year at this meeting, so it’s just now over a year old. It’s the top-selling camera in North America, so the old adage applies: If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. Right now, it’s not broke, so we haven’t decided to make any changes.

What’s unique about Digital DOC?
It’s pretty unique in that it’s a single cable connected to a PC, with a series of LED lights that make the camera function properly. We just happen to be known for delivering the very best picture quality in the industry — that’s the goal.

What keep this camera as the industry leader are two elements: the CCD and the lens train that’s in the camera. Every good, high quality camera comes with a very expensive, very high quality lens. If a camera doesn’t deliver a great image, it’s because the lens system is inadequate.

If you think about the SLR that you own, the better the lens system and the better the CCD, the better the quality of the image. We just happen to have the best components in the industry in our product.

For those who may not be aware, what does CCD stand for?
That’s the charge couple device — technically, the eye of the camera. Every camera has a CCD. Some CCDs are as large as an inch, an inch and a half or two inches in diameter. The Digital DOC CCD is a quarter inch across, so it’s fairly small, and today there are new CCDs being released to the industry on the medical side that are not much bigger than a wooden match.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers today?
Digital DOC is a company that services all of North America, Europe and Asia with products. So, we’re known around the world for our high quality products. We’re not the least expensive game in town; we never planned to be and probably never will be in that particular area. It’s our goal to supply the dental industry with cutting-edge technology. We’re the company that introduced the two-year warranty a few years back, so we make sure our doctors get high quality products, and they can count on us being behind them for support for a good number of years.

The two-year warranty covers parts and labor. We want our customers to know that we are here personally. We don’t have a phone tree in our office. We answer the phone live and in person. It’s a personal touch business for us, and we want to keep it that way.
