CHARLOTTE, N.C., US: In response to the needs of dental practitioners, Dentsply Sirona has developed the CEREC Cercon 4D multidimensional zirconia abutment block—an innovative CAD/CAM block that combines high strength with aesthetics for both hybrid abutments and hybrid abutment crowns. Fittingly, the new Calibra Abutment Resin Cement is also premiering. This cement delivers strength, high opacity and simple usability with CEREC Cercon 4D abutment blocks across a range of restorations.

Since their introduction into dentistry in 2001, zirconia materials have remained the strongest material class for tooth-coloured indirect restorations while consistently improving in translucency and overall aesthetics. High strength and low minimum wall thickness make them an excellent choice for implant-based restorations, which need to withstand high masticatory forces, owing to a lack of tactile feedback for the patient. Although dedicated blocks for chairside CAD/CAM-fabricated implant restorations were previously available, they were not yet able to benefit from the aesthetic improvements of zirconia formulations with higher translucency or multilayering.

Multidimensional layering for implant restorations

Conventional multilayer zirconia blocks are constructed from several horizontal layers; however, this does not fully reflect the contouring of dentine and enamel in natural teeth. To correct this issue, the new, highly aesthetic CEREC Cercon 4D CAD/CAM zirconia block employs a new, proprietary 3D layering technology to create 3D layering that includes a dome-shaped dentinal core with a higher pigment content and opacity, and a more translucent enamel contour. This results in more natural aesthetics that mask the TiBase and match the desired VITA shade.

But the CEREC Cercon 4D abutment block does not stop there: it is also the world’s first aesthetic zirconia meso-block that offers two-in-one versatility, being indicated for both screw-retained crowns and custom abutments. Moreover, the high strength (> 1,100 MPa) of its 4Y-zirconia allows for a minimum wall thickness of just 0.5 mm for restorative treatments in areas with limited space.*

Efficient chairside workflow with CEREC

CEREC Cercon 4D multidimensional zirconia enables an efficient and fast chairside workflow—using CEREC Primemill and CEREC SpeedFire, making the CEREC Cercon 4D abutment block a true 4D experience. Only 15 minutes of milling time and about 36 minutes of sintering time are required for a screw-retained crown.

The new Calibra Abutment Resin Cement has been designed specifically for extra-oral cementation of CEREC Cercon 4D abutment blocks, providing excellent bond strength. The cement is available in an ultra-opaque shade that blocks undesirable substrate show-through and works with TiBases even after cleaning, disinfecting and autoclaving to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Calibra Abutment Resin Cement has been formulated for high strength and easy clean-up for chairside workflow efficiency.

“The CEREC Cercon 4D multidimensional zirconia abutment block is the world’s first highly aesthetic CAD/CAM zirconia abutment block for implant restorations, constructed to mimic a natural tooth,” explained Arjan de Roy, group vice president of essential dental solutions at Dentsply Sirona. “It is currently also the only zirconia abutment block that can be used for both hybrid abutments as well as hybrid abutment crowns. This special block enables dentists to achieve excellent chairside results for their implant patients with confidence.”

Editorial note:

* The high-strength claim is based on material properties and compliance with the ISO 6872 standard for three-point bending strength, in comparison with competitive materials. The strength claim is not indicative of the clinical use of an abutment.
