CHICAGO, Ill., USA: Perhaps one of the more noteworthy product introductions at the recent Midwinter Meeting was the Planmeca PlanScan. The intraoral digital scanner, driven by E4D Technologies, was on display at the Henry Schein booth. The scanner is designed to be super easy, super accurate and super fast.

The device — along with new software that is set to be unveiled in March — is all part of a larger strategy designed to offer dental practitioners “choices that connect,” according to Robert Gottlander, vice president of global prosthetic solutions at Henry Schein.

“If we talk about digital dentistry within Henry Schein, our idea is that we want to work in open architecture,” Gottlander said during an interview at the Henry Schein booth during the meeting. “We want to have solutions that connect, choices that connect.”

“We believe it is important to introduce digital technology into the practice and into the laboratory,” Gottlander said. “We think it is important not only to talk about technology, but what the technology can do for the patient — because in the end somebody has to be treated. So it’s not only about technology, but how to make this work in the practice, how can we make this work in the laboratory.”

“We put a lot of effort into evaluating needs in the office and the laboratory, and then together with the profession come up with the best solution,” he said.

What’s different about the PlanScan, Gottlander said, is that it is connected with the Romexis software, which means that one can offer treatment planning in a completely digital environment. He said it is especially valuable when working on implant cases.

Gottlander said the reaction so far has been “very positive.”

“Doctors want to buy technology for the office that they can combine,” he said. “What we see as our vision is to incorporate clinical software with practice management software, and all of this is to make it easier in the office,” he said.

Planmeca makes strategic investment in E4D Technologies

Planmeca recently announced it has made a non-controlling, strategic investment in E4D Technologies, developer of the E4D CAD/CAM Restorative System. This strategic investment reinforces Planmeca’s on-going commitment to help dental providers improve patient care by offering a comprehensive portfolio of integrated digital dental solutions for dentists and dental laboratories.

“Planmeca’s investment in E4D Technologies offers us an opportunity to grow our company globally,” said Dr. Gary Severance, chief marketing officer for E4D Technologies. “In addition, Planmeca has been a market leader in extra-oral digital imaging for many years, and we look forward to furthering the seamless integration of our CAD/CAM platform with the additional digital solutions offered by Planmeca. Our customers will benefit from the combination of these unique and innovative products and services.”

Under the new agreement, Planmeca joins the partnership of Henry Schein and Ivoclar Vivadent, who have been strategic equity partners in E4D Technologies since 2007, along with certain members of E4D Technologies’ senior management team.
