FREMONT, Calif., US: OrthoFX has announced that its NiTime clear aligner system is now available to dentists throughout the US. The aligner system is the first to receive market clearance from the US Food and Drug Administration for shorter wear time and features advanced polymer technology. NiTime was made available to a limited group of orthodontic practices in 2023, and OrthoFX celebrated its nationwide launch at the American Association of Orthodontists’ annual meeting, held in New Orleans from 3 to 6 May.
Clear aligners have become a mainstream orthodontic treatment, and yet ensuring patient compliance continues to be a challenge for clinicians. OrthoFX co-founder Ren Menon said: “The patented technology behind NiTime aligners improves patient compliance by reducing wear time by 50%, and nearly eliminating the need for extended treatment time, given most cases do not need refinements.”
NiTime aligners have a shorter wear time, being designed for 9–12 hours of wear time versus the standard 22 hours required by leading aligner brands. Moreover, the system achieves up to 30% greater tooth movement efficiency compared with other leading aligners. NiTime provides an enhanced treatment predictability that nearly eliminates refinements: 92% of NiTime treatments are completed without refinements, and the system’s AirShell technology demonstrates 86% predictability.
NiTime aligners feature a patented HyperElastic polymer that maintains biologically favoured force levels and is designed to provide sustained optimal force delivery that supports natural bone tissue remodelling at its natural pace to align teeth and to compensate for daytime relapse. The design of the aligners supports favourable cellular physiology and fosters an ideal environment for biological tissue remodelling via the orchestrated activity of osteoclasts and osteoblasts.
Menon said: “OrthoFX is the only aligner manufacturer of this proprietary polymer material, compared with leading aligner manufacturers who are using off the shelf materials like Zendura A and Zendura FLX.” He said that NiTime aligners are the most advanced innovation in polymer science that the category has seen in decades. “It is a testament to our commitment to solving real treatment challenges faced by providers and their patients,” he added.
Chicago orthodontist Dr Neil Warshawsky said: “OrthoFX has disrupted the orthodontic industry by developing a real solution for lack of patient compliance with their NiTime clear aligners.” He explained that the company’s polymer formulation and aligner design effectively mitigate drastic drops in appliance pressure. “NiTime clear aligners are as gentle as NiTi (nickel–titanium) wire commonly used in orthodontics due to its exceptional springiness and working range, meaning high elasticity at a relative constant force. The force levels applied by NiTime’s HyperElastic polymer are significantly lower than conventional aligners. As a result, my patients feel almost no discomfort while in treatment. I am seeing outcomes consistent with my treatment plans without the need for multiple refinements,” Dr Warshawsky said.
