City leaders may want to Keep Austin Weird, but there’s nothing weird about the American Academy of Periodontology’s annual meeting in the Texas capital city. The 109th annual meeting will take place Friday, Nov. 10 to Sunday, Nov. 12 to at the Austin Convention Center.

Join thousands of periodontal professionals, dental students, periodontal residents, insurance experts and hygienists as they view demonstrations of the latest technologies, get hands-on experience testing out the latest products and learn from some of the industry’s most revered leaders.

If you want to sharpen your skills or learn something new, there are multiple lectures you can attend. Some of those include learning about “Esthetic Hard and Soft Tissue Limitations: Surgical vs. Prosthetic Reality”, “Biological Implications of Restorative Decision Making” and “Oral Precancers and the Periodontist: Red Flags or Red Herrings”. These and many others can net you C.E. credits, ranging from .75 to 2 units depending on the topic.

A Member Resource Center will be set up inside the exhibit hall, and it’s your one-stop shop for information. You can get your member questions answered, get updates on member benefits and pick up free giveaways. You can also get your professional headshot at the Photo Studio.

A highlight of this year’s event is the Dr. James T. Mellonig Memorial Dinner on Friday night. The dinner will commemorate Dr. Mellonig, a leading researcher and educator who passed away in 2021.

Mellonig retired from the Navy Dental Corp in 1989 and from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Dental School as professor emeritus in 2010. He also served as president of the American Academy of Periodontology and published and lectured around the world. The commemorative dinner will include cocktails and remembrance speeches from those who knew him best. It will be held at the historic Speakeasy Austin.

Immediately following the memorial dinner for Mellonig, another special event is taking place — the AAP Foundation Hoedown. Grab your cowboy boots and hat and get ready to swing your partner and two-step the night away. There will be a line dancing instructor teaching you and your friends the latest steps. Swing your partner round and round from 8:30 to 10 p.m. and remember the night with photos from the photo booth.
