Dental News - Inaugural Multicultural Oral Health Summit recognizes DentaQuest Foundation

BOCA RATON, Fla., USA: DentaQuest Foundation, a philanthropic organization committed to the improvement and promotion of optimal oral health, was recognized for its service by the Hispanic Dental Association (HDA), National Dental Association (NDA) and Society of American Indian Dentists (SAID) at the first-ever Multicultural Oral Health Summit, a joint convention in Boca Raton, Fla.

Fay Donohue, president and CEO of DentaQuest and a DentaQuest Foundation Board member, accepted the award.

The DentaQuest Foundation provided grant funding to support the work of the multicultural dental associations as they develop strong national leadership to advocate for optimal oral health among under-represented populations. The July 20-24 Summit was the first joint convention of the three national minority dental associations, bringing together key leaders in oral health to foster collaborative exchanges on oral health solutions.

“The Hispanic Dental Association, National Dental Association and Society of American Indian Dentists are exceptional partners in the quest to improve oral health,” said Ralph Fuccillo, president of the DentaQuest Foundation. “We share the same vision: increased access, quality oral health services and improving oral health for everyone. We are honored to receive this recognition.”

The meeting included a two-part President’s Symposium sponsored by the DentaQuest Foundation. The first session covered “Multicultural Challenges for Health Care and Issues Surrounding Oral Health” and was hosted by Joan Y. Reede, MD, MPH, MBA, associate professor of medicine and dean for Diversity & Community Partnership at Harvard Medical School, and Sarita Arteaga, DMD, MAGD, associate clinical professor at the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine.

Fuccillo hosted the second session, “Oral Health Center Stage: The Media and Multicultural Messaging,” which was moderated by Washington, D.C., anchor JC Hayward of WUSA 9News Now. During the session, the Ad Council previewed its new national “2x2” campaign, emphasizing the need to brush twice daily for two minutes with fluoridated toothpaste.

Attendees left armed with recommendations and strategies to meet the needs of their diverse populations, and with methods for effectively communicating these needs to large-scale audiences.

The Summit also offered robust educational seminars and ceremonial events to recognize outstanding efforts to improve oral health for all.
