The theme of the conference was “The influence of prosthetics in implant dentistry”. It delved specifically into how prostheses influence implant placement and how to achieve long-term success with implants through sound prostheses, reviewed the latest techniques in digital dentistry, from planning to the final restoration, and explored high-end interdisciplinary implant therapy.
The event started with several hands-on workshops diving into digital dentistry, platelet-rich fibrin, ridge preservation and advanced prosthetics, to name a few of the topics. Soon after, the main podium presentations kicked off, featuring topics such as peri-implantitis, minimally invasive implant placement, full-arch implant dentistry, guided surgery, anterior dental implant challenges, the impact of temporary prostheses, and the present and future of dentistry.
Dr Konstantinos D. Valavanis, the scientific chairperson of the event, put together an exceptional collection of speakers and topics to cover the full spectrum of implant dentistry. In his address, he highlighted some notable take-home messages:
- The desired final prosthesis determines the surgical plan.
- An interdisciplinary team approach is the key element for success.
- Facial growth continues into adulthood, potentially influencing implant aesthetics.
- Custom anatomical healing abutments are the best way to preserve hard- and soft-tissue anatomy in the posterior region after extraction.
- Conventional restoration with resin-bonded bridges can offer a reliable long-term solution in selected cases.
The main podium lectures were complimented by several seminar-based hands-on courses for practice managers, treatment coordinators, assistants and hygienists. The seminars covered a range of topics, including dental hygiene treatment considerations for everything from single-tooth restorations to full-arch prostheses, the impact of every conversation on patient outcomes, and the connection between a healthy mouth and a healthy mind.
Research was highlighted during the welcome reception, which featured poster and tabletop presentations. Noteworthy research topics of the award-winning studies included a case study on handling of immediately placed implants after partial extraction therapy in an anaemic patient, employing the conventional fixed partial denture technique for success in implant restoration and clinical techniques for removing cold-welded Straumann cover screws.
Networking opportunities gave attendees and exhibitors the time to connect with peers and industry leaders, fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing. The congress included a 007-themed gala—a formal occasion for sipping, eating, dancing and mingling. Additionally, the exhibition hall provided an interactive opportunity to test-drive the latest technologies and equipment. The event closed with the awards ceremony, celebrating the achievement of ICOI members receiving their credentials, which included six diplomates, ten masterships and 95 fellowships.
Overall, the ICOI World Congress was a remarkable success, highlighting the global nature of implant dentistry and reinforcing ICOI’s commitment to advancing the field through education and innovation.
The next ICOI meeting will be held in New Orleans in the US. More information can be found here.
